The faster the line - the slower I go ???

Long time lurker, first time poster.

Back in November I contacted Sky as after an 'upgrade' of the line from 8mb to 10 mb my average download speed of 6.5mb and upload speed of 0.3mb had changed to 2.9Mb download and 0.6Mb upload.

I was told " I have checked your account, and confirm your Download speed is currently capped at a speed of 3Mbps. I tried reconfiguring your line, however the best speed you can get is 3.5Mbps.". I got the feeling that they thought I was lying about the 6.5Mb speed I previously had and did not pursue it further.

Now the 10Mb line is 20Mb (according to Sky website, but I have not requested any change) I am getting 1.5mb

In a nutshell, speed and ping are now way too slow for my MW2 sessions so I am off to Be unless any of you Broadband gurus can help.

PS - nothing changed with my setup and I have tried plugging into the master socket with no improvement.

      Connection Speed 3648 kbps / 605 kbps
      Line Attenuation 40.0 db / 21.1 db
      Noise Margin 8.0 db / 16.7 db

You say there is no improvement but does the SNR go up? THAT's the question that needs to be asked...

Also it is the TEST socket you need to plug into, behind the Master faceplate.

Re: The faster the line - the slower I go ???

OK - I tried it in the TEST socket and results as follows:
      Connection Speed 8186 kbps / 605 kbps
      Line Attenuation 39.5 db / 22.3 db
      Noise Margin 7.2 db / 16.9 db

I can see that there's an immediate leap for the Connection Speed, but the other stats look very similar? SpeedTest.net returns very similar stats to before...

That's good that your sync speed increased when you plugged it into the test socket it means that you arent capped. If it hadn't your other stats would have changed. You have problems with the internal wiring which is causing excessive noise and halving your connection speed look at fitting a filtered faceplate to remove these problems.
Leave it in the test socket for at least 24 hours which should allow sky's system to update and then test the speed on speed.io - speedtest.net can be very unreliable.

Assuming the set-up is correct in extension sockets you may have, then you're looking at a faulty faceplate/wiring.

Your throughput speed that you see on speed tests should increase almost instantly, so run a wired speed test and see how it comes back.

Re: The faster the line - the slower I go ???

The test socket stats I posted were via homeplug, but to eliminate any doubt I have retried with a laptop connected via ethernet cable directly to the router and got the following, depressing, results:

I will follow simonmpoulton's advice and leave it connected to the test socket for 24 hours.

If it helps at all - these were my connection details from November - doesn't appear (to the untrained eye) to be any worse than I have now, although the speed was faster then?

Nov'09 - prior to "reconfiguring your line"
      Connection Speed 2880 kbps / 605 kbps
      Line Attenuation 39.0 db / 20.9 db
      Noise Margin 8.4 db / 16.0 db

IPstream and the like take time for the profile to rise, but changes to sync speed on LLU should be apparent instantly once the line syncs back up. What OS you running?

      Main PC is windows 7
      Laptop is Ubuntu 10.04

I was using Firefox on both OS's, so just tried Chrome on the PC and got similar results:

Just please try using Speed.io instead of speedtest.net and see if you reproduce the same test results.
