My Internet is getting slower as the line gets old?

This is a discussion on My Internet is getting slower as the line gets old? within the Sky Broadband help forums, part of the Sky Broadband help and support category; I'd say anywhere around 4096-5120kbps or so as a conservative guess. Perhaps a little bit more....

Re: My Internet is getting slower as the line gets old?

      Ok,
just got off the phone from sky, they told me that the line has been under test since I last rang & the 10 days will be up tomorrow when the guy is going to ring back & let us know what is happening.
Unfortunately I wasn't told the last time I rang that the line would be under test so the router has been switched off at night & sometimes during the day when we have been out so I'm expecting to be told tomorrow that the speed I have is the best I can get.
What would you advise to do in this situation?

I'm starting to get very tired of this lot....ringing up waiting ages to get through then getting fobbed off.

I wish I knew what magic word to say to get it sorted.

From what I have read I thought you could tell if your line was under test by the upload stream rates?

Would you advise that I leave the Netgear router on?

      Stats just taken (Netgear router)

      ADSL Link..................Downstream............... Upstream
      Connection Speed.....3069 kbps ...................574 kbps
      Line Attenuation.........52.5 db .......................33.1 db
      Noise Margin.............15.2 db ........................9.5 db

      Thanks.

It's simple just leave it on until the DLM finishes then give them a call and say you switched off the router several times by accident and it's capped your speed as a result and would like the limit removed.

I'm not sure why you're being given the run-around, it's pretty shoddy. Have you been given a reference number and/or transferred to the customer solutions team at all?

      simonmpoulton,
Yeah it sound simple but it doesn't seem to work that easy for me

      User05
No I have no reference number just the persons name and he said that he was Tier 1. He also said that he couldn't pass me through to Tier 2 until the line tests were finished tomorrow.

I'm not expecting the test results to be good as the router has been on & off a lot during the past 10 days,
I'm running my own netgear router at the moment.

I guess I'll just have to wait until tomorrow & see what happens, if I'm told that the speed is going to be 2.6meg I'll ask to have it configured manually.

      Thanks.

Re: My Internet is getting slower as the line gets old?

      Coming back to the thread….

Well sky never did ring me back the next day

I intended to ring them back but had to put it on hold as I've been a bit busy.
But then I done a speed check the other day & noticed that my speed had went up by approx 1Mb/s to 3.5Mb/s.

I logged into my sky account on line & went to “My Broadband” where it stated that line testing had started on 18/06/10 !

So, I’m back on my original sky Sagem router & these are the stats I’ve just taken:

      ADSL Link..................Downstream............... Upstream
      Connection Speed......4095 kbps .................606 kbps
      Line Attenuation..........51.5 db ......................32.3 db
      Noise Margin...........…6.8 db ........................10.5 db

      Thanks.

That looks odd a nearly 10db drop for only 1mb gain over your netgear. Maybe the sagem isnt as good with your exchange as the netgear was.

Plug in your netgear router and see if there's an improvement to either the downstream or whether the noise margin shoots up.

Re: My Internet is getting slower as the line gets old?

      Hi,
Ok I have just taken the below stats from the respective routers (6.55pm)

      Sky Sagem:

      ADSL Link..................Downstream............Upstre am
      Connection Speed.....4095 kbps................606 kbps
      Line Attenuation.........51.5 db....................32.3 db
      Noise Margin..............3.5 db.....................10.5 db

      My own Netgear:

      ADSL Link..................Downstream............Upstre am
      Connection Speed.....3847 kbps................606 kbps
      Line Attenuation.........53.0 db....................33.4 db
      Noise Margin..............6.9 db..................... 10.5 db

      Thanks.

      EDIT...........

      (7.06pm)
Just put the Sagem back on line & the stats now read:

      ADSL Link..................Downstream............Upstre am
      Connection Speed.....3786 kbps................550 kbps
      Line Attenuation.........52.0 db....................32.5 db
      Noise Margin..............7.2 db..................... 9.5 db
