Your sync speed is 3mbps, but the 2.5mbps you're referring to is your throughput speed. You'll never see your exact sync speed for your throughput rate due to overheads and such, but it should be about 80-90% of your sync speed - which is about right if you're seeing 2.5mbps on speed tests.

Looks as if the person you talked to has passed it to sky's customer solutions team. I only hope the ticket is looked at by someone who has a clue what they're doing.

      Hi,
Well no change to my speed so far. I hope she did create a ticket & not just fob me off, she did sound quite sincere though.

I'll give it a day or so & if there is no change I'll ring again.

If I knew as much as you guys I could have blinded her with router science but most of the technical side of this is a little over my head as I've had no experience of it.

      Thanks.

Tickets will usually get picked up by CST in about 72 hours, so if a ticket was created then hopefully it'll be looked at within 72 hours.

      Thanks for that.

I'll leave it until next week & see if anything happens.

      I'll report back either way.

      Cheers.

Can I ask what sort of speed you think I should be getting given my router stats?

      Thanks.

Well, if someone changes your noise protection, delays and line code properly then I'd guess around 4096-4608kbps if you're lucky.

Re: My Internet is getting slower as the line gets old?

      Hi,
well it's now over a week since I was told they would reconfigure the line & nothing has happend, my speeds are just the same, so I'm going to have to ring them again.

Just taken these stats from the master socket test point (behind faceplate)

      Sagem F@st 2504 router:
      ADSL Link...............Downstream............ Upstream
      Connection Speed...3068 kbps...............606 kbps
      Line Attenuation.......52.5 db....................32.2 db
      Noise Margin............9.1 db.....................8.5 db

Stats from my own Netgear DG834GT router:

      ADSL Link...............Downstream............ Upstream
      Connection Speed...3069 kbps...............589 kbps
      Line Attenuation.......52 db......................33.1 db
      Noise Margin...........14.3 db....................10 db

The Noise margin is quite a bit more on the Netgear, is this a good thing in as much as the speed could be increased more if this router was used?

I know I can't use this router when I phone them as they will know it's not one of theirs.

      Thanks.

Yes, that's a pretty hefty increase. Sky won't help you for technical faults if you're using the third party router, but I think most would turn a blind eye if you're getting a lot better stats from a different router. Sky usually get you to try different (third party) routers you may have handy for no sync & speed issues etc. if you have any handy anyway to confirm router issues.

Just keep the third party router connected and I doubt anyone would notice or say anything. If they do, just mention the fact the sagem is giving poor SNRs and that you'd like a replacement. I doubt it'll cause any hassle whatsoever.

When you ring up next time, ask whether a ticket was raised in the first place. If not, then it seems the agent you talked to was lacking a brain.

Re: My Internet is getting slower as the line gets old?

      Thanks for that.

So what sort of speed could I reasonably expect if the line were to be configured with the Netgear connected?

I'll make sure to ask whether a ticket was raised for my last call.

      Thanks.
