So at this junction we have one cable with new colours going to the downstars sockets, one cable going upstars, and an incomming cable, is that right?

      If that is correct.

      (1) what are the colours of the wires in the cable going up to the socket upstares?

      (2) does the incoming cable go directly to this junction? and if so what are its colours.

Going upstairs are blue/white, white/blue thats it.
Incoming cables are brown, orange, green and the blue thats loose.
The incoming brown is connected to the blue/white for both upstairs and downstairs.
The incoming orange and green are both connected to the white/blue for both upstairs and downstairs.
Now get this, although when i popped the old master box off i can see orange/white terminated, theres nothing at the connection end!!
oops what have i done....looks like a rewire is in order

Well dont worry too much, the incoming line is internal colours, so somwhere there is another junction where the line from the outside connects, do you have an overhead line, or is it underground.

      Re: Hope it gets better!!

Righto then . when you get all the stuff, proceed as follows.

      (1) Run the 3-pair telephone cable from the junction to the location of the router. Fit the NTE-5 master and connect as follows

      Green/white to B terminal.

      White.green to A terminal.

      On the filter faceplate connect.

      Blue/white to 2

      White/blue to 5

      Orange/white to 3

      (2) At the junction down stairs disconnect all wires to the incoming pair and connect

      Brown to Green/white.

      Orange to White/ green

You should now have a dial tone at the NTE-5 upstaris and nowhere else.

For the rest of the wires, match the colours and you will have a dial tone at the rest of the sockets.

If you do not have a dial tone at the NTE-5 then swap the orange with the green wire, The colours that are in use are wrong, but it is possible that a repair in the past has resulted in brown and green being used, but try brown and orange first.

Can you get to the box on the front of the house just to check the connections are o.k?

      Re: Hope it gets better!!

Before you go off, there is something you could try now and that is to disconnect the green wire at the junction, leaving just the orange and brown connected as the line pair.

This is obviously an old installation, and in the past, people often had a sharied line (or party line) this had three incoming wires, one of which was earth. It is possible that the earth has been connected to your line. It would be the green wire and will do your broadband no good at all.

Just disconnect the green wire and check you still have a dial tone. If you do, resync your router. If you have lost the dial tone reconnect the green wire.

      Re: Hope it gets better!!

New parts didnt turn up until today so no chance to make any changes over the weekend.
Sky reports it started testing on the 21st, but guess what, speed still the same.
