That way he can use existing wiring and filter the extensions that do not need ADSL, the cable that goes to the router can stay as is & use a filter or this socket :-

BT Socket, Master, ADSL Filtered With RJ45/RJ11

      ??
Yes I know, but he has the router upstairs and i was just trying to get the master up there as well

Either way is acceptable. Personally i would have just changed the junction box (if practical space wise) for an NTE5 & faceplate as that way you can keep all your existing sockets & no extra wiring is required. Both methods should see the same performance if the existing cable is OK.

thanks, that makes a bit more sense now.
I'll wait for the bits to turn up and give it a go.

I agree with you, and if I were doing this I would put the NTE straght on the line pair, But we have no photos, and I was trying to come up with a solution in which there was little chance of the OP being stuck with no line, hence using a new cable to the master (no chance of damage) and little disurbance of the old wiring. He has already found a loose connection so its getting on a bit.

While you wait Gary, have a look at the back of your exsisting sockets and make a note of what connects where, try and sort out that loose blue wire as well.

      Re: Hope it gets better!!

Looks like i ran a new cable from the connector box to where the master used to be. I now have blue/white to 2, orange/white to 3 and white/blue to 5. The spur out of this for the Sky HD box is the same.
So, no sign of the mysterious blue cable thats dangling in the connector box!

no this was the one downstairs, but as i cabled them both no reason to think it will be any different.

      Re: Hope it gets better!!

Well assuming your incoming cable comes directly to this junction? this old cable must go somewhere.
As I understand your set up, there is one cable from the juction to the two downstairs sockets, one of which is the present master, and another cable from the juction to the socket upstairs.
