Also, for "tracert<first IP returned> did you want this typed into a new command line? Do i type the words 'first Ip returned' or should there be something else typed here?

Sorry for the complete novice questions as i've never had to go through this process as this is the first time i've had broadband. Hasn't been a pleasant experience so far with no access to any of mny e-mail addresses. Just found out can't even listen to the Five live football commentary on BBC website.

Sorry, totally my fault. The stuff in <> is meant to be substituted. So, for example:

      You type> nslookup www.google.com
Computer returns something like> Server: richelieu.ns.easynet.net
      Address: 195.40.1.36

      Non-authoritative answer:
      Name: www.l.google.com
      Addresses: 66.102.9.104, 66.102.9.147, 66.102.9.99
      Aliases: www.google.com

      Then you type> tracert 66.102.9.104

And the computer returns> Tracing route to 66.102.9.104 over a maximum of 30 hops

      1 1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.0.1
      2 38 ms 34 ms 43 ms cr0.lnpop.uk.easynet.net [82.108.10.5]
      3 28 ms 28 ms 29 ms 82.111.96.65

      6 30 ms 28 ms 28 ms ge2-0-0.er3.thlon.uk.easynet.net [82.108.6.153]

      7 30 ms 29 ms 30 ms 195.66.224.125
      8 39 ms 39 ms 39 ms 216.239.49.254

      12 40 ms 39 ms 39 ms 66.102.9.104

      Trace complete.

Obviously you should substitute www.google.com for whatever site you're having trouble with. If the tracert gets so far and then just starts returning stars instead of times then you've hit something that is at leat blocking the traceroute packets - that's quite normal even with sites you can access, many disallow traceroutes for security reasons.

Basically, the test will show first of all if there are any problems with the name servers (that translate www.google.com into the numeric IP address(es) needed to communicate) and then with the network connection between you and the troublesome site.

Just for comparison, with a site someone else is having trouble with accessing, here's my results from UK Online:

      My IP: 82.108.*.*

      Server: richelieu.ns.easynet.net
      Address: 195.40.1.36

      Non-authoritative answer:
      Name: expedia.co.uk

Notice that (even though I can actually access the site) the traceroute times out after it hits the ISP hosting Expedia - this means they're blocking the traceroute. I'd be fascinated to compare the results with someone who can't access the site.

As to the Five Live problem - are you able to access other streams on the BBC site (BBC News low bandwidth stream, for example)? Some UK Online users on Adslguide reported problems accessing Five Lives streams but not other streams, and it turns out (you guessed it) that the BBC had some of UK Onlines ranges blocked as not being in the UK. That one seems to have sorted itself out for them at least, so presumably Sky can do the same thing.

OK I just did the "Ipconfig /flushdns" cmd and EVERY site I try is working now

Every site listed by everybody on this thread works now, So either "flushdns" fixed it or the IP range has spread over the net now so please try any sites that didn't work B4!
