      Connection Speed degradation :-(

Hello all, I've been reading these forums since late August and have felt much of the same pain of those migrating to Sky Broadband. Anyway I've been up and running (I use the phrase loosely) since 12th Sept on the 2MB base package, having left a very reliable 512k Nildram package.

Since being connected I've had a continual problem with connection speed degradation and continual disconnects which I can only solve, by disconnecting and reconnecting from either the Master or Test socket. I've seem the connection degrade to below 240 kbs. On reconnection it will bounce back up to the 2044 kbs mark for a few hours.

I've done basic tests, like making sure all phone sockets have a micro filter on them and tried hardwired and wireless. I haven't yet tried TCP Optimiser as I thought I'd get some advice from the forum first.

I know I am not particularly close to my exchange and Sky support have down the basic line tests and can also see the loss of speed.

Here are some stats from today. I've noticed the speed decreases as the noise DB increases. Any help appreciated please!

      Welcome to the site krupatel

Looking at those stats the Attenuation seems stable enough but the Noise Margin looks like a yoyo so I would say thats your problem you need to find the cause of that.

Some Advice.. Its always advisable to inform your old ISP as soon as you have migrated that you have moved.

regarding the noise margin, the higher the better, as it gives the router more room to play with the connection so to speak.

For those of you that don't mind some light reading this makes for a good read

You can also check to makes sure all phone points that are in use have filters on them and if that the case remove anything plugged into them and test them one at a time to see if any of them are causing a problem.

Ok here's an update on sorting out my problem which taking Wheelie's advice is caused by the yoyo Noise Margin.

I gathered this could well be down to the way my place is wired up. So I moved the router from the master/test to another room, leaving the master filtered. Here I got the same problem of degradation. Almost giving up, I thought I'd try removing the filter on the master as I never needed one there when with my old ISP.

5 hours went by and behold no degradation, 10 hours still the same, 24hrs and STILL the same. Here I am now some 4 days later and my line is still holding up with no obvious disconects either!

I'm a happy stress free punter for now!

I hope you all can get to the bottom of your own specific issues as I know how time consuming and annoying it can be.

Remember it's not always Sky's fault. Good luck.

Does anybody know that if you've got a phone in an upstairs room do you need to put a microfilter on that as well?Even if there appear to be no probs with the dialling tone?

yes all phones should be filtered, unless that extension is filtered at some other point.

Thats great news and I am pleased you managed to get to the bottom of the problem

I am not sure why putting a filter in the master would cause you any problems unless it was a prefiltered master.
