      Wireless Problems

      Hello everyone,

My home set up is a Dell pc connected by cable to my SKy Netgear router, my girlfriends sony laptop is connected by wireless no problem. But I have just got myself a sony laptop and no matter what I do, it won't connect or even find my router. It's finding various other connections in my building and surrounding areas, but it refuses to find my router.

Any suggestions or ideas as to what the problem might be please?
      Thanks.

Using a computer connected via Ethernet.
browse to 192.168.0.1 , user: admin password: sky
click setup if black router, wireless settings if white
change channel to 1/6/11 (experiment with each)
      click apply.

      Re: Wireless Problems

Hi, It's showing up on Channel 1 now but it says "The settings saved on this computer for the network do not match the requirements of the network"

      Not sure what that means.

Thanks for getting back to me.

      Re: Wireless Problems

That often means that the secuirty setting is wrong. Check that the PC is set to the same as the router, say WPA on both and not WPA2 on one and WPA on the other.

      Re: Wireless Problems

Ignore that, I worked out what you meant and ensured that the settings are the same but it still says connection was not possible due to an unknown reason.
It must be a security setting of some sort.

Should the encryption type be TKIP or AES?

      Thanks

      Re: Wireless Problems

If you are using WPA2 it should be AES WPA should be TKIP

      Re: Wireless Problems

Ok, well my router is showing up fine and registering with an excellent signal. The settings on the laptop match the settings on the router but still it won't let me connect.

I'm at a loss as to what to do next. Thanks to everyone for the help so far.

Edit: I was given this laptop by someone who was already using it to connect to their wireless broadband. WHen I try to delete their network it reappears. Could this be getting in the way of my router?

      Re: Wireless Problems

Have you managed to solve this?

I've just Sky Broadband, and my laptop and my girlfriend's netbook connect fine. My work laptop though doesn't.

It thinks it has connected, either through wireless or ethernet cable, but when you go to browse, it won't connect to any site. So I looked on the router - and it's not registering the laptop there at all?

It has the 2 IP addresses of my normal laptop and my GFs netbook, but not the IP address of my work laptop even though my work laptop seems to have been given an IP address!!

      Does anyone have an idea?

      Thanks!
