      Re: Line attenuation suddenly increased

Internal wiring, faulty cpe (router, filters, adsl cable etc.), line fault, DLM changing settings on the line (doubt a jump that huge, though), severe external line degradation.

Chances are internal wiring or line fault, I'd say. Any noise on the phone? Is the attenuation the same whilst in the test socket with a swapped filter?

Post up the full stats out of curiosity.

Hmmm, distinct lack of dial tone on the phone...... that could well be the problem!!!

Plug a corded phone directly into the test socket. If it's still the same whilst in the test socket, then get on the phone to your line rental provider.

I live in a new build so the TEST socket and MASTER socket are actually outside in the new BT master socket. Corded phone on a filter at the nearest socket and nowt. Used the BT online fault reporter and it's suggesting a fault with the bt network as the test has got stuck there. We'll see what they come up with!

This is the problem with external NTE (XNTE), there is no easy way for the end user to test the line without disconnecting their internal wiring. The official way is to remove the yellow plug from the XNTE, so isolating all internal wiring and then do a BT line test. The obvious problem here is you cannot do it on line, you would have to use a mobile phone.

The unofficial method is to disconnect the internal wiring and connect a phone dirrectly to the 2 and 5 terminals of the XNTE, no dial tone there equals a network fault.

Why the hell these external units could not be fitted with a standard plug and socket (in the US external network interface devices have a RJ11 plug and socket) so that you could just plug a phone into it, is beyond me.
