      Massive downloads without doing anything

According to Sky usage, I have downloaded about 1.2gb of data since yesterday afternon. All I have done is watched 3 minutes of low res video on Youtube, browsed a few websites and checked email.

The PC was only on for about 8 hours in total.
I have completed a complete virus scan with Avast and have no trojans lurking (that I know of).
During 2 hours :33 min of use after I reset yesterday the router downloaded 424530 RxPkts and 240958 TxPkts.

My router now tells me that it has downloaded 1048948 RxPkts and 600940 TxPkts in 17 hours 'System Up Time'. (PC was turned off for 9 hours of that time).

I am not sure how these numbers equate to data downloaded in gb.

This seems like a lot of activity!! Is this usual?

      Nottnick

      Advice please

Does anyone else use the router? Other computers? or do you have any background programs that are downloading anything?

Also YouTube can use a lot of bandwidth even when loading low res videos.

Get the Freeware version of Malwarebytes and run a complete scan. Then get Advanced System Care Free, go to the Utilities menu and find the Start up manager. Turn off all programs except for Antivirus and anything else that you NEED at start up such as Touchpad, Wireless etc, if you are using a laptop. This will A- Remove anything that Avast left behind, and B- Stop any programs that run in the background that you don't know about. It will also speed up your PC a bit by reducing the amount of simultaneous processes running.

Is your wireless connection secure, or turned off if you don't use it? Do you have Sky Player installed on your PC?

Re: Massive downloads without doing anything

      Thanks for suggestions.
      I'll do some more troubleshooting.
It's another1 gb since I posted this morning!!
      I have secure wireless.
I don't have sky player installed.
What I'll do is log router status just before I switch off computer tonight.
I'll see what it says when I switch on tomorrow.
After that I'll go through things bit by bit.
      I'll report back.

Re: Massive downloads without doing anything

Have a look in the Attached Devices section of the router settings, just to make sure no one is piggybacking. The most secure wireless is one that has the 'Enable Wireless Access Point' is unticked.

You might also want to open a Command Prompt and run netstat /b just to make sure nothing is running that shouldn't be.

As an extra precaution you should download and run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com Avast is a reasonable AV, but it will not detect all trojans.

This is weird, I would turn Wireless off for a while, thats of course that you aren't using the wireless. Just to see if anyone is piggybacking like Isitme said.

Re: Massive downloads without doing anything

      Still confused.
      Current update:
Last night left router on - everything else off. No real action.
      Today -
      Switched off wireless.
Ran all scans etc. all clear.
Have only used internet for simple browsing (ebay + sky forum).
      Email - no attachments.
task manager - everything disabled except essential windows.
Now have excel spreadsheet produced - average download about 170,000 RxPkts per hour.

So far today nearly 1gb from Sky.
      Maybe this is normal.
Any other ideas? Is this about what would be expected anyway?

If you are showing over 2 Gb of usage in two days doing what you describe, that is far from normal. I take it you are using the Sky meter to check these figures? Download a trial of NetMeter and check what is going through your connection. There are free versions around but this one is fully compatible with Vista and Win 7. Net Meter - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

I am assuming you are on Base or Everyday, in which case you will very soon get a letter telling you that you are being upgraded. Either you have a very bad trojan or Sky have got their wires crossed and are monitoring the wrong connection. Running Netmeter will show which.

As an aside my RxPkts are 3700 an hour over 428 hours.

      OK
I'm running netmeter. I think I am on base and did get a letter.
It tells me that I am uploading at about 585 kbps.
      Downloading at about 30
Does this sound like a trojan?
