      New Sky Customer

      Hi all,

This is more of an introduction/fact-finding visit than an actual problem! Got my Sagem router today and my line was already active, which is nice. Was told I had an excellent line by the OpenReach guy who connected it, so I was hoping for nice high speeds. I've signed up for the Sky Ultimate unlimited broadband.

Set it all up, changed the internal DHCP range, changed the password, setup DynDNS, updated my PS3 firmware and whatnot. Then I had a look at the stats and ran some tests. I'm not an expert on ADSL, so I thought I'd post here, let people have a look and then check back in a few days and see if anything has changed. The connection has been rock solid so far today.

      Router Stats
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4096 kbps 512 kbps
Line Attenuation 29.0 db 15.5 db
Noise Margin 16.6 db 14.0 db

I've been keeping half an eye on these and the noise margin hasn't gone below 16.5db since I first turned the router on about 10am this morning.

Do the gurus here think I'll be able to get slightly better performance when it's all settled down? I see that the Downstream attenutation is a little high, but not terrible. I'm probably about 1.2km from the exchange, maybe a little less.

On an unrelated note, the Sagem router has been excellent. My apartment has good signal in all rooms and the wired and wireless connections for my various gagdets (PS3, Wii, Windows and Linux laptops, netbooks, iPod Touch and so on) have all worked perfectly without any drama. Very impressed

      Re: New Sky Customer

Your welcome letter should explain about DLM and that it will take 10 days for your line to find it's most appropriate speed. Based on your stats you can expect a much higher speed than present. When your Noise Margin is around 7db, then you know you are at the optimal connection.

You should expect to get over 14Mb with that line attenuation http://www.skyuser.co.uk/adsl2_checker.php

      Re: New Sky Customer

Hmmm...came home to a crashed router today...SSID was being broadcast, but no DHCP on WLAN or via a cable. Restart fixed that, but my connection stats are now officially in the toilet.

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 7006 kbps 796 kbps
Line Attenuation 32.5 db 14.6 db
Noise Margin 7.5 db 13.5 db

It's not slow, really, but if that's all I can get then I'll be a little bit disappointed, I think.

      Re: New Sky Customer

Hi, this is Dave here reporting to you live from the Master Socket, here in my own apartment. The crowd are a little tense as we connect up the Sagem direct to the test socket with only a small microfilter as a nod to dignity. Okay, it's finished syncing...we'll be right back with those all-important stats!!

Connection Speed 7002 kbps 796 kbps
Line Attenuation 32.5 db 14.5 db
Noise Margin 7.4 db 13.5 db

      And they're exactly the same...rubbish

yeh if thats your stats from the test socket then that is the max your going to get, you could try and get sky to to take your line off adsl2 and put it on g.dmt to see if you can squeeze 8mb

      Re: New Sky Customer

Those speeds do suck for your attenuation

If more than one socket check there dead when your in the test socket.
      Any noise on the line?.
Try a diffrent filter, sagem all in one t-shape filters are poor anyway think about a prefiltred faceplate XTE-2005 Filtered Master Faceplate - ADSL Nation
