      Really strange disconnection issue!

      Hi
This is my first time so please be kind!

I have a very strange problem. I can stay connected to sky as long as I stay a room away from my router (wirelessly) and keep the power cable connected to my laptop.
The minute I disconnect my laptop from the mains to go on battery power the disconnections start.
My router is plugged into the test socket on the BT master and my only house phone is plugged in here too with a splitter(in the lounge). A family member who is a BT engineer told me to do this as I messed up other extensions in the house by following instructions on here about removing the ring wire . My own fault for dabbling.
In the evening, if I sit in the lounge with the laptop (on battery) I lose connection every 10 mins, the router tick light goes orange so I know it's not a wireless issue.
I would really appreciate some help as I've exhasted this forum (and others) searching for a solution.
      Many Thanks

Sounds too much of a coincidence that unplugging your laptop from the mains causes it to knock your router off but it could be a faulty PSU on the router

well thats not going to help him fix his problem or get what his line is capable of any helpful input?

debsy if its definately the tick on the router turning amber and not the @ light then i would say trying a new psu would be worth it.

      Re: Really strange disconnection issue!

      Hi

My mistake it is the little 'i' light with the circle round it (internet light) that goes amber. Tick light off and wireless light always on.

I called sky earlier about the problem (and mentioned the comment about being capped) and the nice man at tech help said it's better to get the connection staying on before looking for more speed.
He asked me to try disconnecting my cordless phone and using the power cable on the laptop while in the lounge. Doing both but still losing the internet connection between every 5 to 10 mins. I've even changed the channel from 11 to 6 (sky preferred). It's this bad between 8pm and 11.30pm.
I am now about to call back to see what else I can do!

      BTW he is a she

      Hi a couple of ideas.
Have you tried turning off UPnP in the router -- lots of people find that solves disconnection problems.

      Hi
Won't turning off UPnP stop my Wii from connecting wirelessly to the router? We use the Wii to watch BBC iPlayer wirelessly (I have no probs with the router disconnecting when doing this in the eve!).

An update: After changing to channel 6 on router and keeping the laptop power cable plugged in at 9pm last night, I have had a continuous connection. Maybe now I can ask sky to increase my speed!

if the internet light on the router(the little "i") is turning amber then this is not a wireless issue. if you are connected in the test socket and this keeps happening then give sky a call as the router is dropping the ip address. ensure your phoneline is clear(no crackling etc) before calling sky to rule this out as a voice fault. your obviously using an old white netgear reason which may be causing some problems but either way if your in the test socket and the internet light is turning amber then sky need to check for external faults, check line configuration and maybe try another router
