      Oh there's one here? Just tried it myself - it's not very good Still couldn't hurt to use it amongst many when ascertaining an average across many speedtest sites

      A far better way is to download from a trusted site ( like Ubunto) and see what performance is like in the real world.

      The problem with the BT tester is that the file size is very small. With a highspeed connection a 15 Mb file would zip through too fast to calculate the speed. Thinkbroadband supply a better one with files of various sizes from 1 Gb down.
      thinkbroadband :: Download Test Files

      Anyone on a restricted allowance should remember that this counts against your allowance, so if you are on Base or Everyday, a 1Gb file represents 50% or 10% of your allowance.

      Oh there's one here? Just tried it myself - it's not very good
      Why? Is it not accurate or is it because it does not have fancy graphics? Apart from Thinkbroadband the others you have mentioned are not in the least consistent. Speedtest.net in particular giving some really ridiculous results.

      I find the speedtester on this site very very irratic. I also find that it is recording lower speeds than any other speedtest I've tried and about 1/5th the speed of an HTTP download.

      This is the Sky User speedtest result on Virgin Media 50 Meg XXL:

      And this is an HTTP download on the same connection:

      Possibly explains why the average download of the VM 50 Meg package is recorded as "12xxx Kbit/sec" on this site :P Oops...

      Possibly, but it could also be because the VM users are too thick to select the correct package. You will also notice that the average for the 'M' 2Mb VM package is 4500kbps, which suggests this is the case. The tester only reads up to 20Mb+ so it is pointless trying it if you have a higher connection speed than this, it is likely to throw out a corrupt figure. Maybe the site Admin will look into upgrading it.

      RE: SOF006 - it's a great little download manager isn't it? I used to use Gigaget unfortunately it only works with Internet Explorer under Windows XP - crashes under Vista / 7. If only giganology had kept it updated - when it works it's much faster than Free Download Manager

      RE: Isitme: Hmm... well the average intelligence of VM's customer base aside; it doesn't appear that the speedtester does record upto 20-mbit/sec otherwise that's what it would have recorded on the VM 50 Meg connection; which is clearly quite happy chugging along at twice that with any HTTP download.

      I'm not trying to rip the site apart, quite the opposite. I just feel it's only fair that a clear flaw with the speedtest is pointed out so that there is less scope for people thinking they have throughput problems when they don't
