There are people on here with 16Mbps on a 30dB attenuation so good lines can do it

OK, in the test socket the SNR is better - 7db, and the attenuation is 29Db

My point is that yes, the socket its in is more noisy, but the same socket under pipex delivered rock solid 14Mbit service.

Oh, and Im past the cooling off period.

Im tempted to just take the hit on whatever cancellation fee (10 months @ 10 pounds a month?) and move to 02 or Be.

There's no guarantee it'll be any better, though...if it's a line fault then you need to get that fixed. You still go your old router? If so plug that in and see what it trains up at

Re: Terrible speed on a decent line - do I have any exit route?

OK, so i've done a few things - disconnected some noisy extensions, added a filtering faceplate. My stats are now:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 9213 kbps 1034 kbps
Line Attenuation 29 db 15 db
Noise Margin 15 db 7 db

I think Im right in saying I should be getting close to 16mbps on that line. Now, ive only just plugged the router in having rejigged things, so will it take a while to get up to speed? Do I need to call SKy and get them to do anything?

You will need to phone Sky and say that you have fixed your internal wiring and get them to manually configure the line.

The jump of 11 dB in the noise margin just by sorting out the internal wiring shows how much of a difference it can make.
