Only way you would be able to test it is to remove everything thats connected in the house and then put the router on the first one that comes into the house, I am guessing the one you have is wired into a small connector box where the outside line comes into the house.

Yes thats correct, i actually have the larger master socket but that is on a second line which is dead would it be possible to install that box in place of the smaller master socket? Or would that require Bt to do such a thing?

I have no idea because if it is a master socket on the dead line then by law you should not be touching anything on the line-in side of it as that belongs to BT.

So I can't really advise you to do that sorry its entirely up to you.

Ok thanks for your help looks like the best thing i can do is get bt to replace the little master with a larger one. Do you know if Bt will do such work as im really interested in the filtered faceplate idea but as it stands now thats impossible.

DO NOT TOUCH IT!! If you do you will be breaching Oftel/BT/NTL regulations and risk being disconnected from the network!!
The NTE 5/CTE 5 Master Sockets were introduced because of this prolem & to allow DIY installs of extensions!
