Just phoned Bt, They did a line test and everything was ok an advisor will ring me back between 2pm-4pm on my mobile so i guess ill have to explain to them that my phone line is dodgy. Only thing is i know when an engineer comes he is going to say its my fault as theres loads of extensions on it and it looks like a mess. I just dont want to be footed with a huge bill.

If you have an intermittant fault then the line test was probably just when the fault wasn't there.
Old sockets can wear out. I expect you've noticed that the phone crackles when you touch the plug/lead that is plugged into the master socket and changing to a different phone doesn't help?
Sounds like you need your master socket looked at.

A crackling line can be caused by bad connections or loose wireing. If the phone cut's out after 4 rings,it's "ring-tripping" & is caused by bad extensions, faulty wireing ect.You could say that the plug socket feels loose & when you 'waggleit'you're line goes dead.(normally caused by the wife hoovering & smacking the socket with the hoover, breaks the connections inside )
With regards to the extensions, just say they were alreadt there when you moved in!
Failing that,if you see a (U-hum!) NTL engineer in the street, bung him £20 & ask him to replace it with a CTE-5 master (Same as a BT NTE-5,no difference apart from the logo) But if you tell anybody,I'll get wheelie to run you over!

Some Advice.. Its always advisable to inform your old ISP as soon as you have migrated that you have moved.

Will the outcome of the telephone conversation be final or will the engineer decide whether or not a charge is required because i dont want the engineer turning up replacing it then saying thats £110 please

Have that discussion with the person on the phone.
Normal practice is that it is free if it concerns their equipment. Chargeable if it is yours.

I had bad line problems about 5 mins into a call. It wasnt till my DW said it starting happening AFTER I tested the new router in the master socket that I realised what had happened
The test socket is clipped to the back of the main socket, the bottom clip had come unclipped. This meant the face plate wasnt fully in the test socket.
This clip isnt great and I reckon with a little "force" the clip gives. Remove your faceplate and see if the test socket has any "give"?Sky Broadband Max | Wired | Clarity modified ADSL master socket | 10m twisted pair ADSL extension

I dont have a faceplate, its just the standard socket not nte5 or whatever its called.
BT just called back Engineer is coming out Fri 6th, Hopefully the engineer will replace the socket and not charge.
