      Only receiving 0.3-1.3mbs?

Hi everyone, hope all is well. I've just signed up today so bare with me. I have been having problems with my sky broadband for a good few months now, we was only getting around 0.3-1-3mbs (at the highest). So, I gave sky a ring today and they did some 'stuff' to our line and now, as the guy i was speaking to said, we have no faults on our line etc and are receiving a healthy speed of 10-13mbs. However, I ran a speed test and all thats is coming through is around 1.2mbs at the most, but when i log onto my router the downstream connection speed is 10-13mbs. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I may not have explained that well, if not get back to me and i'll do my best!

      Thanks!

Are you on wireless? Post a set of stats from the router and tell us how the PC and router are connected to each other, we can tell you what is happening from there.

To rule out wireless problems, which is the most likely cause, plug into your router using an ethernet cable and run a speedtest here http://www.skyuser.co.uk/speedtester/

      Re: Only receiving 0.3-1.3mbs?

I can't plug straight into router as thats downstairs and I have a mac so I cant exactly take that down lol. Anyways i think your right, when i run a speed test on the laptop downstairs, im getting around 8.5mbs when the router stats say 9.5ish. So how will i overcome this? Get a new router or antenna? Also, when i run a speed test, should i get exactly the same as my downstream stats on my router?

      Thanks for the help!

Run a cable from your router to your Mac upstairs. I bought a box of Cat5e with 1000 feet of cable over six years ago and it has come in handy many many times and saved me far more than the 20 or so pounds I paid for it. I havee run cable in more than one home I lived in and made cables for friends of mine. How far is it from your router to your Mac?

Could also check what channel you are on for wireless, some people in your area may be on the same channel and you are all impacting each other. If on 6 or 7 try 13.

You might also like to consider Homeplugs, if running a cable is too awkward.

      Re: Only receiving 0.3-1.3mbs?

Ok, so got another problem. When the router was plugged into the main socket i was getting around 10500kbps on my router stats and when i did a speed test sat right next to the router i was getting around 5-7mbps. Now just plugged it into the test socket and getting around 13500kbps on the router stats and on a speed test around 8mbps? Im confused as to whats going on here :S

if you've gained 3Mbps in the test socket then you've got a noise issue internally, speed test results can vary - which speedtest were you using?
