      Offered Guide Speed of 4meg

I have finally had my phone line installed today
after a problem with giving me the wrong install date

The openreach engineer said that the line will be good for atleast 7meg on an 8meg adsl 1 line
as he has only ever installed lines upto 8meg in my area for bt
so didnt have an idea on unbundled adsl 2+

i also talked him into a nte2000 adsl splitter which was nice

      9am the line was fitted
10am i ordered unlimited and was given a guide speed for 4meg

Now the problem is im 237m from the exchange
      and was expecting much more

i spent the next 6 hours on the phone to various idiots who
just kept telling me things like the guide is usually correct etc
and not telling me much else even after explaining how close i am etc

anyway i finally got through to someone who wasnt a plum at sky
he said he would run various tests and such to see what he could find out
20 mins later he came back saying all the broadband checkers where coming back from anything to upto 1meg to 4meg
so he got someone higher up to run an actual line attenuation test on the line
that came back between 13 and 15 db

i have 4 days left on my 30 day cool off period
am i going to be good at 13-15 db ?

Post your full set of router stats however it sounds like you are on DLM as after any upgrade you are put on it by default, I believe the start speed for all lines is set to around 4Mbs and your speed will slowly increase over the next 10 or so days. However with an attenuation of around 15db as you say you should be looking to get anywhere between 16-20Mbs. However as I say post your stats and we can have a look.

Have you got a set of router stats to post? They will help someone tell you what you should expect but I would guess that the 13 - 15Mb is a good estimate.
How to get your router statistics

i havnt got my router yet so cant post any stats
but im not interested in a 4meg connection

and the problem is if it gets activated and its 4meg im stuffed
id rather return tv/phone/broadband under 30 day cool off
and stay with my 50meg virgin but i only have 4 days left of my cool off period
and guess what my adsl will be activated 1 day after the cool off

Re: Offered Guide Speed of 4meg

You will activate at 4Mb then your speed will increase up to the maximum the line will give. I doubt it will stay at 4Mb for very long but if you can't even take a few days of line training then ADSL is not for you.
Have you tried putting your details into
::. Kitz - ADSL line and exchange checker .:: ? you may not get a result if your line is newly installed though but it will give you a more relevant line length as you may be 237 as the crow flies but your line may not go that way.

Re: Offered Guide Speed of 4meg

if you've got 8Mbps now then ignore it - it's an under estimate thats all...

just remember, 4Mbps start speed, 10-days training then see what u get...end of the day it'll be more than usable, it's only broadband remember!!

I've an attenuation of 31dB and connect at 8Mbps (which is top for my package) so if you're half that you'll be laughing!!

Re: Offered Guide Speed of 4meg

well the openreach engineer said something about the line lengh being around 0.9km
after his tests had finished from the master socket

which after looking at ::. Kitz - Max speed calculator .::
seems to tie up with what the sky person said of 13 db of attenuation

it just got me going that sky kept insisting i wont get over 4meg on the line all day

Re: Offered Guide Speed of 4meg

They would not commit themselves on a new connection, so play ultra safe. There are penalties for overestimating connection speeds, so I am fairly sure the agents have been ordered to give ridiculously low estimates. You are not the first this has happened to. The problem with the cooling off period for broadband is that they only allow 8 days and the training period can take up to 13-14 days to complete after activation. Anyone with half a brain knows that this is nonsensical.

If the BTO engineer was correct in his estimate of 900ms, then you should have no problem getting the full 20Mb. Nothing like the 50Mb with cable, but about the best you will get with Sky ADSL.

PS. I know the training period is 10 days, but it can take 3-4 days to start.

Re: Offered Guide Speed of 4meg

If you've got a cooling off period, don't worry about it. See what happens after the initial 10 days or so, then, depending on the speed you're getting, either get on with it or complain.

No point worrying about what may not be.
