Only Internet Explorer Will Connect to the Internet

      Hey guys.

My family has Sky broadband connection, and everything was working perfectly fine until a few days ago when my computer contracted the "XP Internet Security" rogue virus. I took the correct steps to get rid of the virus as this has happened to me before. This included

      • Adding a fix.reg file to counter the effects of the virus (pop-ups etc etc)
      • Restrating computer
      • Updating and running Malware Bytes
      • Running Combofix

Only this time, when I turned my computer back on, the only application able to access the internet, was Internet Explorer (I am using this now to post this thread)

Programmes that couldn't connect to the internet included:

      • Skype
      • Steam
      • MBAM
      • Windows Live Messenger
      • Mozilla Firefox

I guess it is worth saying, that before the above mentioned virus was contracted, I uninstalled AVG to install McAfee, as my family has a 3 computer license to it. In the short time that my computer was left unprotected, my computer was attacked.

I now cannot install an Anti Virus on my computer as every one needs to be downloaded via the setup.exe app, and that cannot happen, as I download the setup file, run it, and then when it downlaods (or at least trys to) the automatic update, it cannot, as it cannot connect to the internet.

So I know the applications are not being blocked by my anti virus software as, well I have none. I also know they are not being blocked by my firewall, as I have experimented with the exceptions list, and even turning it off, and no luck. Only IE works and nothing else, and I need my active internet for college reasons etc. Any help is much much appreciated, anything I can do to help you help me just let me know.

      NOTE

The information in my profile is not likely to be correct, as I don;t know what router etc I have.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I should have made clear that the virus has been removed and cleared completely, but none of my applications connect to the internet.

Try in safe mode, could still be something PC-based on startup

Can you ping sites through the command prompt?

I unfortunately cannot get into safe mode, that is another issue I have with my PC but didn't post it here as I was mainly seeking advice for my internet problems.

When I start my computer, and keep tapping F8 to get the boot menu up, the boot menu comes up, but it is as if my keyboard freezes, I can't scroll up or down the menu with the arrow keys or the TAB key. Also when I press Num Lock, Scroll Lock or Caps Lock, no lights on my keyboard come on, so my keyboard essentially freezes.

How do you do that? I read somewhere online about pinging sites on CMD and tried a few but nothing happened.

Re: Only Internet Explorer Will Connect to the Internet

you go to start, click on run, type in cmd and press enter. Black box should open, type in
      ping Google
      and press enter
If you cannot get into safe mode the issue is not going to be easy to sort or diagnose, is it a USB keyboard and if so where is it plugging in?

I tried the ping google, and it said:

Ping request could not find host Google. Please check the name and try again.
I have tried 3 times and the same thing happens.

I have a USB keyboard and it is plugged into the back of my computer, I have tried it in 3 other USB ports and still no luck.

Re: Only Internet Explorer Will Connect to the Internet

Silly me lol. But still no luck.

Pinging www-tmmdi.l.google.com [216.239.59.103] with 32 bytes of data:

PING: transmit failed, error code 5.
PING: transmit failed, error code 5.
PING: transmit failed, error code 5.
PING: transmit failed, error code 5.

      Ping statistics for 216.239.59.103:
      Packets: Sent = 4, Recieved = 0, Lost = 4 <100% loss>,

Re: Only Internet Explorer Will Connect to the Internet

Are you certain the virus has gone? If you are download and run Winsockfix from here-
      Download WinSockFix 1.1.0.13 - WinSockFix - A free Winsock/Tcp repair utility - Softpedia
If you can't download it yourself, get someone to do it and save it to a USB drive.

If this does not work, you would be better and safer doing a full format and reinstall.
