Sky Sagem F@ST 2504 Router and WD TV Live HD Media Player

      Hi
I have just purchased a WD TV Live HD Media Player and I am trying to get a connection from it, through my Router (Sagem F@ST 2504), to shared files on my PC.

I can setup the WD device manually with IP addresses and so on, and by clicking on "Attached Devices" in the Router, I can see the WD device.

But I cannot see any of the files on my PC. I am using Win XP SP3, and looking at the Workgroup in Windows Explorer, I can see the WD device.

If I try to "Check the Connection" in the WD device, it checks three things. The IP Address which is OK. But it displays an error message "Incorrect DNS Server Address. Please check your network settings and try again" when it tests for the DNS Server.

In the Sky Router, DHCP is enabled. But I am unable to ping the WD device.
I imagine there is a simple adjustment or setting to change to resolve this problem.

Is there anyone out there who has experienced this proble or has some sort of solution?

      Thanks
      Terry

I can setup the WD device manually with IP addresses
If you have set this manually, what have you used as the DNS server address? 192.168.0.1?

      Yes
The DNS server address is indeed 192.168.0.1, which I think is the default for the router anyway?

That is correct. Maybe you could try an Open DNS address, see if that makes any difference. Try 208.67.222.222.

There is a very lively WDTV forum where you might get something useful, find it at WDTV Forum - WDTV Media Player - Index

Re: Sky Sagem F@ST 2504 Router and WD TV Live HD Media Player

      Hi IsItMe

What do you mean by Open DNS address, and what is significant about 208.67.222.222?

If I get the WD device to automatically setup the network, it wanders off for a while and then says it cannot do it. The IP addresses are then displayed as

      IP Address: 169.254.218.202
      Subnet mask: 255.255.0.0
      Gateway: 0.0.0.0
      DNS: 0.0.0.0

Do you think it might be something to do with the Sagem router?
Or do you think it might be the WD device somehow?

In the meantime, I will have a look at the WD forum you mentioned.

      Thanks
      Terry

      IP Address: 169.254.218.202
That is a private IP given out when a proper network address cannot be found.

OpenDNS is what a lot of us use instead of the Sky servers. You will find details here - OpenDNS > Use OpenDNS You can use the address without signing up, but registering for Basic brings a lot of perks. It has a lot of advantages over the Sky servers.

Re: Sky Sagem F@ST 2504 Router and WD TV Live HD Media Player

      Hi again IsItMe

I have registered for OpenDNS Basic, but I cannot figure out where to enter the two IP addresses.

At the moment, I have entered them in "LAN IP SETUP" but when I check with OpenDNS, it says I'm not using it.

      Thanks
      Terry

Re: Sky Sagem F@ST 2504 Router and WD TV Live HD Media Player

You have to put the addresses in the DNS section of your network adapters properties, the same place as you would give the PC a fixed address. Ideally this should be done on the router, but the Sky routers don't allow it. Using the addresses on your PC will make no difference to your Media player, you would also need to use them on it.
