No that's not normal, you should be getting much better speeds. You need to ring Sky and tell them that DLM has left your line crippled and you want it to be manually configured.

And to stop them delaying it you may want to plug into a test socket if you have one before calling, they can't make you jump through hoops then.

Cheers for your help - I have given them a call and the guy at Sky said my speed will be manually reconfigured (which he said can take between 20 mins and 20 hours!) - he said I should be expecting speeds of around 4.5MB... does that sound more like it?

I would have said 7-8Mb with ease.

They must have changed their procedure or the guy you got was a noob and didn't know how to do it himself. They can normally do this sort of thing in a few minutes while you wait.

Hmmm I wonder if it's worth calling them back and speaking to somebody else?

Can somebody also confirm if it is free to ring Sky when you have Sky Talk?

Re: Slow connection on Sky BB Unlimited!!

Well I just lost connection, and then it came back on... I have checked my stats again and they are now as follows:

      Router StatisticsSystem Up Time: 04:44:58

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 6877 7403 0 127 292 04:43:45
      LAN 100M/Full 4819 0 0 52 0 04:44:53
      WLAN 11M/54M 17363 16623 0 488 228 04:44:40
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 5376 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 42 db 25 db
Noise Margin 7 db 7 db

Obviously that is better than before, but should I be happy with that or be pushing for more?

The 'Noise Margin' appears to have come down quite a bit - is this good or bad??

Re: Slow connection on Sky BB Unlimited!!

It looks good. You may be able to push out more - the only way to check this is by posting stats from your test socket.

How to test your ADSL in the Master Socket

Regarding the noise margin going down. In your case, it's neither 'good' nor 'bad' as such. The reason the noise margin (SNR) was so high was because you were capped. So, reducing the cap then brings the noise margin closer to the target SNR of 7db, indicating your line is getting all it can. In general terms, if the SNR is below 7db then it's not exactly ideal, although some lines can handle it fine. If the SNR is sitting around 6-7db+ then that's fine.
