Are sky deliberately slowing down my internet?

      Hey,
I had Sky Everyday and seeing as I use the internet a lot I was automatically upgraded to Unlimited which I was fine with. I recieved a message in the post telling me that sky would be performing line maintenance and that I had to keep my router turned on for the next two weeks or so.

During these two weeks the internet was very slow, however I believed this to be due to the maintenance sky was doing. However my internet speed has never changed back to it's normal speed.

I have had it in exactly the same location/set up before during and after and have clearly noticed the speed change. Today I have connected it to the main BT phone socket for our house, and as I expected the speed has remained the same as before.

      Here are my stats:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 378 kbps 796 kbps
Line Attenuation 56 db 34 db
Noise Margin 20 db 10 db

I am connected to the main BT phone socket in my house, using an ADSL filter and the internet is directly plugged into my computer.

I'm pretty certain Sky have just limited my internet speed, has this happened to anyone else and if so what did you do to sort it out? Sky are sending me a new ADSL filter, I've had this one for the past 18 months, have there been any upgrades or are they just sending me this to postpone me complaining about my slow internet speeds?

      Thanks in advance,
      -Mark.

Your connection is very heavily capped. Phone Sky and ask Tier 1 to put you through to the Customer Solutions Team to have the line properly configured. Don't be fobbed of!!

Ok thanks, I will ring them tonight and get back to you with what they say, hopefully they will sort it out without too much trouble.

Tell them your line has been on training and it has left the speed far too low.

      Maybe not...

This is the morning after and my internet download speed has dropped from 2 thousand and something kbps to only 1019 kbps

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1019 kbps 510 kbps
Line Attenuation 55 db 34 db
Noise Margin 15 db 19 db

I will have to contact them again as clearly they have just capped my line speed again, how can I stop them doing this again?

Also please could someone advise me on how quick I can actually get my download speed? Because they are saying about 2.5MB/s but that is still really slow. I think I am quite far away from the exchange but I don't know how to find out.

      Thanks again,
      -Mark.

You're far, but you should be able to get about 4Mbps on GDMT - looks like ADSL2+ isn't best for your line...

Re: Are sky deliberately slowing down my internet?

There is a good chance that it has not been capped but dropped out during a noisy period on the line. Reboot your router by switching of the power for a minute then switch on again. You may resync at a higher speed.
Even if it does, phone them again, get through to CST and ask them to trial your line on G.DMT(ADSL1) as ADSL2+ does not seem to be suiting it.
