      Awful, awful connection speed

      Hi,

Sorry for a long first post but I wanted make sure I give you guys all the info you need to help me.

      I am on sky anytime.

I have been getting very slow download speeds recently and even surfing seems slower than it was. I also have noticed significant lag whilst gaming online recently.

I have run the router test with the below results:-

Noise Margin 9.4 db 10.0 db

      ------------------------------------------------------------

I have run them again with the modem plugged into the test socket as mentioned elsewhere on this site.

I logged on to mysky and noticed that is say my connection is "set" to 512mb. What does this mean?

Thanks in advance for any help!

      Regards

      Re: Awful, awful connection speed

The connection being 'set' to 512kbps downstream (and I assume also upstream is set to this) means that your speed has been capped to these figures. This would have been when DLM (dynamic line management; a training period that stabilises lines) ran and set the speed for the conditions of the line.

You do have a very long line, so it's hard to tell what speed you should be getting, but we can rule out everything before you call sky to check whether you can get any more. At the moment, as it stands, you cannot push out any more speed.

The results from the test socket suggest everything is fine in regards to your faceplate/wiring. Do the following and reply with the results:

      1. Swap over for another filter that you have spare (sky send you three when you joined if you have one handy) and put it directly into the test socket. Only use the short light grey dsl cable sky gave you and run that directly to the router from the filter, using no extension cables and don't connect anything else to the filter. In other words:

test socket > microfilter > router

Re-take the stats and post them back like that.

      2. Check your phone line for noise such as crackling/static/popping.

      3. If you have any extension sockets in the house, check whether they are dead whilst the test socket is in use (if you put a phone in any of the extension sockets, you should not get a dial tone).

      Hi,

Thanks for your help. I have had a look for the extra filter but cannot find them. Is this likely to be the problem and if so where can I get a new one?

I re-ran in test socket again, this time with no phone plugged in. When it is plugged in the phone line is clear, even on a cordless. We have no extension sockets.

      Re: Awful, awful connection speed

Also, mysky says that when I joined my line was tested and that I should be able to reach speeds of upto 2.5mb.

Where it shows the capped figures the connection status tab it says the test was last run 07/03/10 - would this be the training period you mention?

      Regards

      Re: Awful, awful connection speed

Do you ever recall running at a higher downstream/upstream speed previously?

At this point, it's just process of elimination. The only other things that you could rule out on your end at the moment is a faulty filter or faulty router & dsl cable. If you don't have access to another router, then you could get a filter from the likes of tescos, pc stores etc. or sky can send you one for free - but it'll take 3-5 days usually.

If swapping filters doesn't sort it out, then your next step is to ring sky (08442 410515). If by simply configuring the connection sky can't sort it out, then you may find a new router or engineer visit depending on how sky's tests go.

If you check your private messages, I could perhaps offer you a bit more assistance.

Edit: Just seen your last reply. Yes, that'd be the training period - it probably ran due to spotting something creating issues on your end.

      Re: Awful, awful connection speed

Thanks for your help. I am sure that it has run faster previously. Unfortunately I cannot confirm this as this is the first time I have run tests etc.

I will try ringing sky seeing as nowhere will be open to get a new filter until Monday!

If you want to post your stats again, I'm sure they look a lot better.
