      Low sky broadband speed.

I am on the unlimited package for sky broadband, 20 MBs. however, i doubt i get 20MBs internet speed. How do i check how much i actually get? I tried using speedtest.net but the speed varies from as high as 4MBs to as little as 1MBs. Is there a way i can check what speed i should be getting from sky via my post code? Also, do sky cap certain peoples broadband speeds? Or is it generally slow at peak times?

      Re: Low sky broadband speed.

Go through the instructions on the following link and that'll show the statistics of what speed you're getting and what you should get:

How to get your router statistics

Remember, though, despite being on the 20mbps package, it does not mean you will get 20mbps. It is an 'up to' figure, based on line length and quality of your telephone line from the exchange to your premises.

Regarding capping - sky will cap unstable lines, yes, but when the source of the instability is found then sky can uncap it.

Peak time only refers to sky's connect package, not their LLU packages (base, everyday and unlimited). Unless you are on connect, which is doubtful if you're paying for the 'up to' 20mbps package (unlimited), sky do not throttle connections so speeds will not be effected at any time of the day.

Your stats are spot on - however, as Steve suggested, try the test socket, but I'd be surprised if you get more from the test socket.

It seems you just have slow throughput - are you running wireless? If so, then get an ethernet cable connected to the computer and re-try speed tests (preferably elsewhere from speedtest.net because it gives varied readings at best). Try the speedtest on this website, for instance.

      Re: Low sky broadband speed.

You are in the top 5% speedwise, so if you are only getting 1-4Mb either you have something holding you back on your PC or you are using wireless. If you are using wireless download and use Inssider from the link below. Use it to discover the channels being used in your area and set your channel to one as far from those in use as possible. If you are not on wireless post back giving your OS.

As mentioned don't use speedtest.net, it is complete rubbish.

Do you mean the aerial is broken? If so it is not surprising you are having problems. Get a new one, this should do the job - FreeLogix - 7dBi WiFi Wireless Router Antenna Aerial: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo It might even improve on the original.

Sky can send you a free aerial - it's free as far as I can remember anyway!
