Hi guys, this question has been bugging me alot recently.
To put this into context, for example. IF my download speed is 7mb, why am I getting 700kb/s as the transfer rate, when downloading a file?

      Please help.
      Thank you.

there are 8 bits in a byte, your download speed is measured in bits rather than bytes so if your download speed is 7 megaBITS(7000 kilobits) per second then you can divide this speed by 8 to get an idea of how many kiloBYTES you can download per second.

i have 50mb bb with virgin and i download via newsgroups which maxes out your connection speed and i download 5.5-6 megabytes a second wherease my speedtests show 50 megabits.

      hope i explained that ok

Remember too that you will not get the full download speed due to overheads on the line. These can vary from 10-15% of your sync speed. This means if you are syncing at 7000kbps, you effectively have about 6000 available, 6000/8 to convert to bytes = 750KB/s. That's about as simple as I can explain it.
