Why isn't my BT line compatible with Sky broadband?

      Hi everyone,

I have recently moved into a brand new house and decided to get Sky TV, broadband, and talk. I read that I needed a BT compatible phone line to do so. Since it is a brand new house, I had to pay BT 125 to put one in.

However, when I went to order the package today, I typed my new phone number in to check compatibility and the following message came up.

"Based on the number you have provided it looks like your phone line has a service that is incompatible with Sky Broadband and Talk. You can still continue and complete your order for Sky TV today".

But I have a BT line... I don't understand why I can't get Sky talk and broadband.

Can anyone help me out? I have searched everywhere and have found no help for my situation. Apologies if I posted this in the wrong section.

      Thanks very much in advance.

Sounds like a tag is showing on the line, I would think that your line has been plugged into a port at the exchange that BT have not removed the adsl connection from yet.
Complain to BT and call Sky to order, tell them it is a brand new line and that Sky may need to get BT to check the line for tags.

PM me your telephone number and I'll reply whether there are any tags, if you wish.

Thanks, so do you think if I phone Sky and explain the situation, they will be able to sort it out? Or would I need to talk to BT too?

According to tags on the line checker:-

      Exchange Code: STRINGW
      Exchange Name: RINGWOOD
      Postcode: BHxx 3xx
Reason Code: Z - Line suitable for broadband order
Suggested Message: Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial test on your line indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a fixed line speed up to 1Mbps. However due to the length of your line the 1Mbps service may require an engineer visit who will, where possible, supply the broadband service.

Our initial test on your line indicates that your line may not support a reliable ADSL Max broadband service, with current technology. However, an order for 250Kbps broadband speed will still be accepted, but an engineer may need to visit who will, where possible, supply the service.

Our initial test on your line indicates that your line may not support a reliable ADSL2+ broadband service, with current technology. However, an order for 250Kbps broadband speed will still be accepted, but an engineer may need to visit who will, where possible, supply the service.

If you decide to place an order, a further test will be performed to confirm if your line is suitable for the service you wish to purchase.

      Thank you for your interest.

Further Information: No incompatible products found.

If the line is capable of supporting a Broadband product you may now place an order with BT Wholesale Systems.

      ------------------------------

Possibly a sky system error, because there are no tags on that line.

It could be that Sky have not got an up to the minute database of current phone numbers. If yours is new it may not have hit the Sky database yet.

Yep it can take a week to hit the BT database which is what most ADSL providers use (it's not Skys' database) so you may find if you have been active less than a week your details may be wrong on the checker.

Is there a way of knowing when the number is registered or should I just give it a few more days then type the number in on the compatibility checker again?

Call up sky again and get through to the provisioning/sales dept. They'll run a simple 'dsl availability check' and it'll return whether the line should be able to go active or not. If it returns that it will not go active, then ask why exactly and what the next step is.

There are seemingly no tags on that number, so it's maybe that you're not in BT's database yet (more than likely).

Don't know if you've got it fixed yet, but it takes 5-7 days for the system to catch up, and then 15 days to get BB installed
