Unhappy BB speed dropped from 4Mb to 350Kb !!!

I have consistently had a 4.1Mbps download speed with a 600Kbps upload speed since moving from BT to Sky at the end of October 2009. I moved everything, phone etc. to Sky and was originaly on the limited 10Mb plan with a 10GB monthly limit. In January and February 2010 I was hitting the 10GB download limit so in late February I upgraded to the unlimited 20Mb top speed package - not that I expected my 4.1Mbps speed to increase, just to get the unlimited download volume. Within days of the changeover of plan I noticed that the speed shown on the Netgear router stats was dropping, first to 4Mb, then 3.9Mb, then 3.8Mb and it stayed at 3.8Mb for a couple of weeks. I also noticed that the upload speed increased to around 800Kbps.

Then 2 days ago everything started to go very very slow, I checked the router and was getting 352Kbps download with 788Kb upload. I was advised to reset the router by Sky and did this - the speed went back to 4,080Kbps. Yesterday I checked again and the router was showing 2.8Kb. This afternoon I noticed things were slow again and now it shows 416kb. As soon as I reset the router (poweroff then back on) it goes back to 4Mb again.

Any ideas on what the problem might be? I have not installed any new phone kit or made any changes.

      Thanks, Terry

Post your stats, have you got a test socket and have you changed filters in case the one you have on the socket has failed?

Re: BB speed dropped from 4Mb to 350Kb !!!

      Router Stats:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3177 kbps 797 kbps
Line Attenuation 54 db 32 db
Noise Margin 5 db 13 db

I had just reset the router after posting so these are just after a fresh boot of the router.

I do have a Master Socket in my hall, the router is in my office and is connected to an extension socket in that office.

I put a new microfilter onto the router phone cable when the sky help desk asked me to try this on Friday. so this is a different one to the original one used when the problem started.

What is my best way to try a debug this?

Router keeps having a problem with connection and the internet light flashes yellow for a while and the connection speed drops to 0bps during this time.

15 minutes on and the stats now read:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 916 kbps 797 kbps
Line Attenuation 54 db 32 db
Noise Margin 12 db 11 db

You need to give a set of stats from the main socket, it could be your extension is the cause.

Re: BB speed dropped from 4Mb to 350Kb !!!

Stats from main socket with little plug-in panel removed so I can access the master socket behind - just router connected via a microfilter, no phones:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4046 kbps 797 kbps
Line Attenuation 53 db 30 db
Noise Margin 7 db 13 db

Its been running now for about 20 mins with these stats shown and no changes, seems very solid so far (using my laptop via wireless to see this). The only change is that the Noise Margin on the Downstream side varies between 3db and 7db sometimes when the stats refresh, mostly 7db though.

Just remembered, we had some phone problems about a month ago - not BB issues, just incoming calls not ringing the phone. The engineer who visited fitted a new master socket, the old one did not have the separate smaller front panel like this new one does. Anyway, I had removed the 3rd orange wire from all the sockets a year or more back when we were still with BT and this improved my download speed at the time from 2.6Mb to 4Mb, where I have stayed since then. I see that the engineer has re-connected the orange wire from the extension cable to the middle pin on the back of the removable front panel on this new master socket. I will remove this orange wire again and see if this solves the problem, though it doesn't really explain why the speed kept moving up and down.

It might, but the new BTO faceplates have a built in ring filter which is supposed to stop interference from the bell wire. Just about anything from the cat rubbing against the cable to the local cinema complex turning on its AC, can cause interference on the phone line.

Re: BB speed dropped from 4Mb to 350Kb !!!

I think I found the problem - a leaking dishwasher outlet pipe !

My wife just pointed out that there is a bit of leak started in the last week or so in the kitchen as we have a small amount of water coming out from under the kitchen unit housing the dishwasher. I couldn't see how this would be related until I investigated. There is an old unused telephone extension socket on the bottom of the wall behind the dishwasher (I had forgotten that it was even there) with an old microfilter plugged into it, right below the leak.

I have removed the microfilter and dried up the leak. Getting the same solid 4080kbps download speed with the router plugged into my office extension once again. Here's hoping this was the problem all along.

      Thanks for the help.

It could very well be, stranger things have happened. You would be better finding the socket feeding the damp one and disconnect its wires from there. Just make sure it is not looped back into one you use.

Agreed - always best to completely d/c old and unused sockets - they don't add any interference that way
