      Router problem?

Hi guys, bit of a broadband novice so here goes..

      My bizarre problem is this:
Great download speeds on wireless laptop and wired desktop. Both computers have painfully slow browsing speeds. Both scanned for viruses and checked over the browsers, everything ok. Also can't stay connected to online games for more than a minute at a time, and most of the time it fails to connect.

I dug out my old laptop which hasn't been used for a year and this has all the same problems.

I previously had Orange broadband and everything worked fine, since getting Sky 3 months ago this has all been happening.

Tech support at Sky say line is fine (I am DLing at great speeds after all). They said they would send a man to look at the line in the next 3 days.

Anyone have any clue what might be happening? I managed to stay online on Football Manager Live for about 5 minutes and checked the ping graph, it went up to over 3k every minute and back down again.

Any help much appreciated, happy to paste any info you might need

      Re: Router problem?

What operating system do you use? Windows Vista or Windows 7 by any chance?

have a look at these 2 articles

      http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/...spikes-seconds

      http://www.sevenforums.com/gaming/31...ndows-7-a.html

Windows Vista has a WLAN autoconfig feature which causes ping spikes every 60 seconds and can be disabled.
Windows 7 has a network throttling feature which can be disabled which also causes ping spikes every 60 seconds or so.

      You couldn't make it up.

If you go to the command line (press the windows key and r then type cmd)

      type

      ping www.sky.com - t

leave it going for a minute or so and watch to see if the ping time suddenly spikes every 60 seconds or so. If it does it could be that causing the problem. Both those links offer solutions for both issues.

      Re: Router problem?

      Thanks for that guys

      Stats:
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 19996 kbps 1094 kbps
Line Attenuation 11 db 4 db
Noise Margin 11 db 7 db

Could it be a DNS issue? Since the original post I have trace routed some sites e.g. hotmail which seemed to be a very slow loader and I get 0 response from it.

      All help very much appreciated!
