Horribly slow Broadband - Any reasons why this may be, or how to fix it?

      Hello,

I'm currently on Sky Unlimited and my internet is unbelievably slow, and has been for as long as I've had it.

I've currently got the router plugged into the Test socket, the results prove the same through the master socket anyway, except the noise margin is worse.

I'm only about 1.2km from the exchange (as the crow flies), so I don't understand why my broadband is so slow. Any help would be greatly appreciated here, cheers.

you might be 1.2km as the crow flies but that line looks more like 3-4km in true length...it's still very slow as it is. Try your test socket (assuming you have one)

Cheers for the reply. I actually have it plugged into the test socket right now, the statistics I posted are from having it plugged into the test socket, just to make that clear.

Given that you are plugged in the test socket, do any of your extensions still work, have you got an alarm connected to the phone line in any way?

If no then do a quiet line test.

I don't have any extensions, this is the only socket in the house.

Just did a quiet line test, and it seems fine.

Could just be down too a poor quality line,as it may of been repaired with aluminum at some time in the past ,if you live around 2.3km from the exchange as the crow flew, lol.then unless you have very few roads arounf you, then your line length should be within 3-4km i'm 900mtrs from my exchange in a straight line, but actual is 2.2km atten 32.5 adsl2+

Re: Horribly slow Broadband - Any reasons why this may be, or how to fix it?

What can I do if it's a poor quality line? Just live with it?

Any other suggestions as to what the problem might be?

Re: Horribly slow Broadband - Any reasons why this may be, or how to fix it?

Did you do a quiet line test?

Plug a normal touch tone phone directly into the BT master socket.

Dial 17070, press option 2 (quiet line test)

You should hear 'Quiet Line Test' and then silence, there should be no pops, clicks, whistles, buzzing etc. If there is noise on the line, make sure it's not your phones connection to the socket (wiggle it about a bit) and that you are using the master socket. If you are sure its the line making the noise then dial BT (or WorldOnline) and report the fault, they should be able to sort it out. Remember that 'mis-reporting' a fault (e.g. if it turns out to be your phone, extention cord etc.) may be charged a call-out fee by BT

Can you post your stats from the Master socket with the faceplate in place. Occasionally the readings from the Test socket are distorted by a poor connection, this may be happening to you. How many sockets do you have in your house?
