Red face Unidentified Network - Local Access Only - Another one!

For some reason, my Vista laptop has suddenly decided that it doesn't want to connect to the internet.

It gets half way & then says 'Unidentified Network - Local Access Only'.

I have scoured the internet & came accross this forum, which seems to have quite a bit about this kind of problem.

      So I have tried -

Unplugging the battery & leaving for an hour
changing the channels on the router
      changing the power save options
checking the IP is automaticall detected
      Unchecking for automatic IP address
Changing the firewall settings/turning off the firewall
      installing SP2
      Turned of the WPA security
      turned it back on

And I'm still having no joy.

I'm utterly baffled as nothing has actually been changed on the laptop to make this happen. From my Googling, it is likely to be an issue with Vista? I think I pinged my network card & got an error though...Which means nothing to me at all

I'm not particularly up to scratch with the technicalities of things, so I'd appreciate any help to be in stupid people talk, if possible!

Ive had this problem also and either/or restarting the laptop and resetting the router(with the pin hole in the back) seems to get it to work again. No idea why

did you try manually assigning your ip and dns settings? this would be the first thing i would do but if you have no luck..

go into start>right click computer>manage>device manager>check your network adapters section and make sure your adapter is working ok

Unidentified network is a known windows vista glitch. It's random in that disabling/re-enabling your network card sometimes fixes it, sometimes booting the router and other simple things seem to fix it, yet other times it will not fix no matter what you seem to try.

Your best bet is searching through microsoft support's site, or googling as I'm not completely sure myself how to fix it.

Seems people have success with the following link. Follow it exactly as it states if you're editing the registry yourself.

Windows Vista cannot obtain an IP address from certain routers or from certain non-Microsoft DHCP servers

Re: Unidentified Network - Local Access Only - Another one!

Unfortunately that didn't fix it. Still an apparently unidentified network. This is so frustrating. I can't even figure out where the problem is. My desktop works fine witht he cable (it doesn't have wireless), so I don't think it's a Sky box error, and I've tried the Fix It & the DIY Fix It & still no joy.

I think I'm going to have to bite the buullet & take it to someone

Thank you all for your help though!

It's a vista glitch that is a pain in the **** - I've yet to hear one solid way to fix it, so you may need to call microsoft. Then again, they're gonna charge you quite a bit of cash just to chat to them.

Re: Unidentified Network - Local Access Only - Another one!

Well, after tinkering with the IP address & DNS settings, it's now connecting to the SKYblah blah blah connection, but as 'local only' so getting there maybe. It's taken almost 2 days to get to that point though!
