      Huge reduction in connection speed

We have been with Sky Broadband for approximately 2 years and have been (and still are) on the sky max 16mb package. We have had a rock solid stable connection syncing at around 14mb (DL) and were getting download speeds close to this up until the past month or so.

A few weeks ago our connection started becoming very unstable, disconnecting and reconnecting every few minutes and this lasted for about 2/3 days.

Since then the sync speed seems to have dropped to 4mb, and is now locked there. Upload speeds have gone down and latency has increased.

Obviously this is frustrating, as to have 2 years of 14mb connection speed, for it to drop to less than 1/3rd of that for no apparant reason, is less than pleasing.

Here are some current line stats, not sure if there is a problem on my end.

      Modem Status Connected
      DownStream Connection Speed 4091 kbps
      UpStream Connection Speed 510 kbps

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 18189 21459 0 1813 10182 00:37:11
      LAN 100M/Full 27419 22614 0 10603 1969 00:42:25
      WLAN 11M/54M 1044 0 0 33 0 00:42:12

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4091 kbps 510 kbps
Line Attenuation 14 db 3 db
Noise Margin 25 db 19 db

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

Re: Huge reduction in connection speed

Ok this is all the info it states on there about my connection. Unfortunately doesnt seem to have been recently updated.

      "Your Sky Broadband
You have Sky Broadband Unlimited which offers a maximum download speed of up to 20Mb

      Speed Estimate
When you purchased Sky Broadband, we estimated that the maximum download speed for your line was: 10-20Mb

      Your connection details
Line connection testing completed on 19/09/2009

      Download Speed
Your connection has been set to a download speed of up to
      16.6Mb (17024Kb)

      Upload Speed
Your connection has been set to an upload speed of up to
      1.3Mb (1312Kb)"

      So not much use.

Do there seem to be any problems with my line stats?
If not is there any way of increasing the sync speed myself or will i just have to phone Sky and ask them to increase it again manually. By the way my connection has had no problems since it has gone down to 4mb.

Re: Huge reduction in connection speed

I would say DLM has seen the line was a bit iffy and kicked in again reducing the speed. Phone Sky and ask them to set your line manually, you have a great deal of noise margin in hand and should get back to your original speed.

Are you with Sky phone rental? If so you may have been put on the Sky network, this would account for the instability over a few days and DLM kicking in. If not it may have been BT working near your line with the same effect.
