      The box becomes your property on install. You must have the box plugged into the telephone line for the first 12 months definitely, as that is part of the T and C's.

      From someone I know's experience, Sky write and tell you to plug it in and then ask you to call them or they will charge you the 25.00 / penalty charge.

      Whether or not he 25 is still current or in fact even more, the box still belongs to the customer from the minute that it is installed. I suppose Sky could charge you the full price of the STB if you leave before you have actually completed the initial 12 month contract though.

      WoW must say reading these posts, I have had sky now for almost 3 years, and its only been connected to the phone line when I want to watch Sky Box Office. Never once had a letter from sky... Guess I am lucky at something ;-)
