      Connection speed half of what it should be

      I'm new to Sky broadband and new to this forum to apologies if this is not posted in the right area.

      I have the Sky broadband Unlimited package, mostly due to the price promotion and to avoid capped download rates.

      They sent me a netgear 934G router which is plugged into the phones master socket. The master socket is the NTE5 type and there are no extensions on it. On the phone during ordering I was told speeds would be approx 4Mb down and 1Mb up. I get;

      Router Statistics

      System Up Time: 00:59:03
      Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 147233 224991 0 2231 91497 00:57:08
      LAN 100M/Full 4379 0 0 213 0 00:58:58
      WLAN 11M/54M 229691 152729 0 90324 2424 00:58:45
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
      Connection Speed 1216 kbps 512 kbps
      Line Attenuation 57 db 31 db
      Noise Margin 7 db 14 db

      I don't know what the noise margins and attenuation means I'm afraid, but when I was with O2 home broadband and on ADSL2+ I got 4mb down and 1mb up. I don't understand why Sky's service is so slow. I'm I maybe not on ADSL2+? The O2 broadband was a different house but in the same area.

      Any suggestions on getting fast connection speeds would be appreciated.

      Ok this is odd. I removed the ADSL filter that Sky gave me and replaced it with one the previous owners left behind (speedtouch). Down speed is now 3mb.

      Are Sky filters really that bad?

      It depends. It seems some batches are not the best, and others are fine. What are the full stats with the new filter in place?

      There seems to be some dodgy ones around at the moment. Several members are reporting problems. Phone Sky and tell them you have discovered the filters are faulty, that you would like them replaced.
