      friends line

just posting bout my friends sky broadband line, i will try and get some exact details later(he not tech savvy so it like drawing blood out a stone)

he was on everyday and went over the 10gb limit twice and has been put on unlimited,he got email today to confirm it so i assume it has been done in last day or 2.

i got few bits of info off him, he said in netgear router status he connected at 11300 roughly and upload is 400k odd he only has 12.0 attenuation and noise margin was 10 roughly.

question is obviously attenuation allows for the top end speed pretty much,is the reason he isnt at that speed cos of sky dlm since only just being moved over to unlimited recently? or internal wiring? he is connected to master socket and using ethernet cable to the router.

last bit of info he is on sky talk and got sky line rental too.

      Re: friends line

DLM will be running but he really needs to post his stats from the normal position and from the Test socket. A noise margin of 10 is a bit low for a 11300/12dbs combination. Looks like there is a noise problem.

      Re: friends line

ok well a bit of an update, my friend's line has settled down and is showing some good figures, cant remember to the exact kilobyte but this is from master socket:-

      download speed 18439
upload speed 1100(give or take upto 100k)
      attenuation 12.0
      noise margin 6.4

will also get figures from test socket this weekend

main question is the bt speedtester doesnt work on sky llu software does it?
i gave it a try on his comp and got a strange error message id never seen before,if this is the case, what speed test can he do to accurately measure his download speed?

speedtest.net i know is unreliable and he gave the one on the skyuser site a go and both were giving results of 9meg roughly, does sky llu broadband suffer from congestion or certain caps at peak time oris it max speed 24/7? only asking because we done tests at 7 30pm last night.

No it doesn't, it's Connect only hence it being the BT speedtester as you run through BTs gear

No congestion on LLU - are they using wireless?

      Re: friends line

With that attenuation you should see around 16Mb, so something is wrong somewhere. Get him to boot into Safe Mode with Networking and with one browser window only, do a speed test in this site http://www.skyuser.co.uk/speedtester/

This will show whether loaded software is slowing the speed. Some AV and firewalls are very aggressive and can slow speed considerably.

Don't deviate from this site, surfing without protection is not wise.

Can you confirm the OS being used?

      Re: friends line

connection is wired directly connected to router by ethernet and router directly connected to master socket with filter to split the phone and broandband wires.

his OS is vista if i remember right.

      bell wire is removed.

nothing else connected at same time just his desktop pc.

good point bout the antivirus programs running etc i will check aqnd see if there anything bogging his connection down.

microsoft security essentials is a good free antivirus program isnt it? and i'll pop malwarebytes on there too.

so no congestion on unlimited llu means he should be 18meg 24/7?

thats pretty bad then 9meg jesus he losing half his speed somewhere

      Re: friends line

It will be physical setup, PC setup will not impact the sync speed. Are we sure nothing else is on that telephone line? Sky TV box for example or other phones?
