2nd Laptop Cannot See My Network

      Hi folks

My work laptop now cannot see my network, even though my hardwired pc and wireless laptop are all happily connected. My work laptop has previously found my network every time and I have never had a problem connecting.

I can see the other local networks, but not mine. Why is this?

(Meant to add - Sagem router - is there a wireless set up guide for that one - I did notice the one for the dg834)

This was supposed to be in the router section - sorry...

Don't know, as the pc is using the ethernet cable (not disconnecting for a while. I am currently connected to a neighbour's unsecured network though. :-)

That is a clue! Your neighbour is probably broadcasting on the same channel as you, causing interference in your network. Download Inssider from the link below and use it to discover the networks in your area and the channels they are using. Change the channel in your router to one as far from those in use as possible. Channel 13 is usually good as few know it can be used.

Re: 2nd Laptop Cannot See My Network

Might be worth you running this
      inSSIDer Wi-Fi Scanner | MetaGeek
you ideally want to keep 5 channels away from other Wifi hotspots
this isnt always possible but aim to be 5 Ch's away from the strongest
      neighbouring hotspot

Due to the way the channels overlap you only really have 3 full clear channels
in the range 1-13 not sure how much it really matters in practise as in my location
I can only get 3 Ch's aways from other hotspots, but still seems to work well.

Re: 2nd Laptop Cannot See My Network

Interesting app, though the two other networks that are currently active are well spaced - on 1 and 6, with me on 11. I'll check later when others come online, but to be honest, I have the feeling this is more to do with my router settings, but cannot remember how to add another device, even though it was working a few weeks back.

Oh crap, just as I posted that, another sky network has appeared on channel 11! Pretty weak signal though. How much does the conflicting network signal strength matter?

It could ake all the difference, try 13, this is usually overlooked.

Re: 2nd Laptop Cannot See My Network

Ha! I can see three other networks all on the same channel 1 - no wonder people have so many problems with wireless. I have selected channel 13 and will give it a go later. All work and no play... :-)

      Thanks again folks!

The only setting that would block you is if you set up a Wireless Station Access list and your laptop was not included. Have a look in the Wireless settings to see if you have done this. If you have, untick the Access control box, add your laptop, then turn it back on. If your lackadaisical had used this, you would not have been able to connect to his router.

While you are in the Wireless settings, provided you do not have old equipment using wireless 'b', change the Auto mode to 54g only. This allows your router to output all its power on the 'G' channel and not waste any catering for 'b' equipment.
