Awful speed

Hi, I would very much appreciate some advice regarding my speed please.

I have recently upgraded to Sky Broadband Everyday, mainly for the higher allowance as I know my line will not support a high speed.

when on Base I sometimes got about 1500kbps but it frequently went down to 6/700 until I phoned Sky when it would go back up again for a short while.

It seems to have settled back at about 600 which is ok bearing in mind I don't watch video, game etc. yesterday however it got down to about 300 and eventually I couldn't even get pages to load. The problem is not with this computer as I also have a brand new laptop which could do no better. I am using a wireless connection which shows as excellent, moving from the plugged in method did not seem to slow thing up at all. The router is plugged into the master socket.

These are the stats I got this morning, can anyone help please

Router Statistics

*System Up Time:* 16:59:47

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
WAN PPPoA 101 111 0 82 168 00:02:43
LAN 100M/Full 3319 0 0 8 0 16:59:42
WLAN 11M/54M 56322 58429 0 922 126 16:59:30

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 763 kbps 471 kbps
Line Attenuation 52 db 34 db
Noise Margin 11 db 10 db

PS can anyone tell me how to insert the stats image properly, as I have seen in other posts.

Many thanks

Re: Awful speed

as you can see the monumental jump in noise margin shows your internal wiring is holding your connection back. fit one of THESE and then get back onto Sky and they can remove the cap on the line

Re: Awful speed

Many thanks for the advice. Before I get one of the BT faceplates, which I am quite happy to do, I do actually have an ADSL Nation filtered master faceplate lurking on the shelf. Would this have the same effect, if so I can fit it, otherwise I will get the BT version as you kindly suggest

Re: Awful speed

absolutely, some people say it's better than the BT one but I don't notice a difference. Just use that and assuming the noise margin stays as high as it is Sky can get your speed up

Re: Awful speed

with the SNR now higher, looks like you could get around 5 - 6 meg after sky configure your line

Re: Awful speed

I have now fitted the filtered faceplate as was suggested and already the broadband speed seems to be more stable and constant around 700kbps, which is good compared with before. I spoke to Sky who say 10 days of tests are being run on the line following my upgrade from Base to Everyday after which the speed should increase automatically, if not I have to get back to them and they will up it for me.

Chap there was very helpful and did run a test which shows the line will support 3.5MB which is very much higher than before the faceplate was fitted, which bears out your comments above. Pity we are so far from the exchange, but short of moving can't do anything about that!

Many thanks folk for your help and advice, I will let you know the eventual outcome.

Re: Awful speed

What are your stats like from the faceplate? I would have thought you would have got a bit more than 3.5Mb, more like 6+Mb.

Re: Awful speed

Stats just taken

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 763 kbps 606 kbps
Line Attenuation 50 db 31 db
Noise Margin 19 db 19 db

I am awaiting the outcome of the Sky tests with interest, I do know that whenever I have asked an ISP site to try the line to see what they could , BT etc, they all come up with the figure of 3.5mb max, subject to the usual provisos about distance etc.
