      Sky sync speed getting lower?

When we first joined Sky, we had the Mid package, and a sync speed of 8mbps, we then upgraded to Max and got a full sync speed of 16mbps, 100% stable with no dropouts or disconnects. Then they started DLM, and the sync speed started dropping, it started disconnecting all the time. This happened for a while, and ringing Sky did nothing, until finally they replaced the router (Sagem) with a new one (another Sagem) and it was fine again, no dropouts, but the Sync speed is now lower (14mbps - I know people who get less than this are probably thinking, "what a c**k", but if I'm capable of getting 16mbps, which can't I still get that (and possibly more as it's 20mbps now). When I download something, no matter what/where it's from, I get no more than 1.1MB/s (~10mbps sync) when I used to get 1.8MB/s when we first got Max.

What can I say to them to get them to remove the cap (as it'll be a tier 1 agent reading responses of a computer screen and telling me my line doesn't support those speeds that I used to have).

      Thanks

Edit: Also, I ran TCP Optimizer (before, I never got more than 300KB/s downloading a single file (unless I downloaded a few files at a time) and I now get the max speed possible on a single file, but the overall speed hasn't improved.

You need to post your router stats so we can confirm you can get more speed.

      post your stats first
in the mean time ring sky have your router in the test socket at the time to make things faster and tell them you been having a slow speed which they will respond you shouldnt be having slow speeds with your connection tell them that you used to have a 16 MB connection can they configure your line manually for the best speed

that's what i did also got my max delays to 8 with a speed increase when others told me it wasn't possible

Well, I sent an email asking them to remove the cap, so they set the cap to 10mbps now. Nice one, Sky.

      Here are the current stats

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 10080 kbps 1024 kbps
Line Attenuation 24.0 db 13.5 db
Noise Margin 7.1 db 9.0 db

Before they reduced the cap, it was the same but the downstream connection speed was around 14mbps, attenuation was 28db and the noise margin was 7.2db

I'm pretty sure the cap was because around the time of DLM, it started disconnecting a lot, and shortly afterwards it turned out to be a faulty router, so I wonder if this had anything to do with it. When we first got max, I had a 16mbit sync speed and no disconnections.

According to these figures you are getting as much as you can, your noise margin being just slightly above default. You should be getting much more with your attenuation, so if these are from the Test socket, there is something wrong with your external line.

Re: Sky sync speed getting lower?

Its probably nothing to do with it but have you recently been moved to SVBN? I was moved to this new network and had a similar unexplained drop in both attenuation and in noise margin, which dropped me from 18mb to 10mb (even though the lower attenuation should have given me more speed). This was blamed on DLM when I enquired about it with Sky. I had tried several reboots via the router menu, which made no difference. What fixed it for me was pulling the power cable out and leaving it for a minute. Once the router resynced I was back to my previous stats.

As I said its probably not related but worth a go if you haven't already tried it.

Re: Sky sync speed getting lower?

Sorry, what's the difference between SVBN and GDMT?

Anyway, plugged the router into the test socket, disconnected all of the phones and sent an email to Sky. The router now has the following stats, and they're going to run DLM again for the next 10 days

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 16935 kbps 916 kbps
Line Attenuation 28.5 db 12.5 db
Noise Margin 7.2 db 8.0 db

Re: Sky sync speed getting lower?

SVBN = Sky Voice and Broadband Network:
It's their full communication package, completely taking it away from BT. All enquires go to Sky regarding any issues you have with your line.

      GDMT:
The line mode used for speeds below 8Mbps and for longer lines, less susceptible to line noise than ADSL2+

Either the line wasn't setup correctly (my guess) and the email has since had the line reset OR it was just a setup issue your end (faulty filter?)

Re: Sky sync speed getting lower?

Well, we did have a faulty filter a while ago, as well as a faulty router but these were replaced.

The only problem now is they said to reconnect the telephones in our house, but that means having to take the router out of the test socket and plug it back into the main socket which will affect DLM right? :/
