Sorry for misleading you with the "hosts" file location. It's obviously system32, not system. My bad. I hope you all understand how to edit the file, as stuie_y2k2 explained in details.
Yes it looks like an intermittent block, as the site does open sometimes. I actually managed to download a few files from megaupload and rapidshare (without editing the host file) after 12 at night. But its dead during the day.
Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test works for me right now.

      Re: Are sky blocking rapidshare.com?

It cannot be an intermittant block, it is obviously a peering / routing issue.

If Sky wanted to block RS they would, and all variations of it. ie The https:// equivalent as well. Something has gone boobs up, and it would appear since RS upgraded between 28th February and 1st March with over 200 new servers, that something has gone wrong.

Sky would have no benefits (and could do without people complaining it doesn't work on their telephones) by blocking RS intentionally - It is as above, either routing / peering or a configuration error by RS or on a global block list as per IWF. Do you really think Sky are sat there, putting the block on every few hours, and then taking it off again?

      Re: Are sky blocking rapidshare.com?

Just as a heads up, I have just this minute rang our contact at Sky to make them aware of these issues, and this thread. (they may already have been aware)

So hopefully if there is an issue, at Sky's end, then hopefully now, it can be sorted out.

Cool - I forgot to say, I mentioned the speedtest.net domain as well. I have no idea if Sky will get back to me on either website, but at least if they didn't know, they do now.

      Re: Are sky blocking rapidshare.com?

thanks for the above but it seems like this is a see saw between SKY and Rapidshare blaming each other.. the facts are some can download some cannot, that means its not blocked.. so what is the problem and has this happened before? personally I think its Rapidshare even though the above says not.. either way someone is going to lose my custom.. simple as.

Yes it has happened before and I still think it is a routing issue by Rapid Share where they wont allow someone in using a certain router or server, they are well known to pass the book in these circumstances.

Historically, it has never been proven to have actually been Sky's fault, more that RS have been at fault.

The work that RS have done recently, as in upgrading servers etc would (to me anyway) indicate the blame to be on their side. Especially as the majority of this thread's complaints, are near to that date as per the RS news page. Or this page, if you cannot read that link.

Either way I don't think anyone would accept the blame, and also, we can obviously see the frustration caused.

Whatever the cause, it is definitely intermittent.
