It seems strange that someone should say this over the phone, yet all official written replies put this down to 'technical difficulties'. I think, at the moment, it would be illegal for Sky to block any site not on the IWF's list, even if they were guilty of hosting illegal files.
Fraid I didn't get a name I just rang the number on sky website concerning broadband at about 1am this morning. After getting the run around by the girl that answered the call I asked to speak to a supervisor who again initially denied blocking Rapidshare. I then pointed out that using my iphone I couldn't access Rapidshare using WiFi (my sky internet) however when I turned WiFi off and used 3G I could. He went away for a think and came back to say that he couldn't connect to Rapidshare either & he knew certain file share sites were being blocked and it would appear that Rapidshare had been added to that list.

Think I might try ringing them again to get more details

That would be those on the IWF list, he has just made an assumption without any real knowledge.

I wouldn't bother if I were you. Those that have had emails back have been told that there are technical problems. I doubt if the customer facing staff have any idea what is going on.

      Re: Are sky blocking rapidshare.com?

Hi Chaps. I have been viewing the replies and I am greatful that other users are having this awful situation with Sky, re specific sites cannot be accessed. I can use my mobile dongle and access these sites without any issue. Therefore it looks like Sky has been instructed from high!

Also too much info is available on this thread for Sky to monitor and change tactics on how to block. It is blocking as certain work arounds are not working now.

As I have said I can use my mobile dongle and can access most of the blocked sites without any issue.

If this becomes the norm, it won't be much use having fast broadband to download or stream as sooner or later they will get restricted too! Welcome to the new UK folks

      Re: Are sky blocking rapidshare.com?

I use megavideo a lot I have a subscription with them, I have not been able to access the site in a normal way for 4 days now.

I was using a proxy and now I can get to the site but videos will not load ?, there is something going on other than Sky I think. It would be great if Sky actually told its customers what was going on.

If they do not know they should find out!

      Re: Are sky blocking rapidshare.com?

I still don't understand why Sky would wish to block a site which isn't devoted to criminality and does follow a take-down procedure. Still makes no sense to me.

      Re: Are sky blocking rapidshare.com?

This is starting to get stupid now. I'm an active member of xda developers forum and I'm having real problems downloading any of the developers rom images. These are legal open source roms so shouldn't be block at all. I do realise that a lot of copyrighted stuff get up/down-loaded on these file sharing sites, but to block the minority at the expense of the majority is just stupid.

      Re: Are sky blocking rapidshare.com?

Has anyone statred compliling a list of ISP`s who do not block these sites OR who appear to be exempt from the technical problems that Sky are facing?
Since 2004, Sky does not support Dolby Digital 5.1 via HDMI.

      Re: Are sky blocking rapidshare.com?

I don't believe any other ISP is experiencing these problems, except possibly UK Online. Almost all will block the completely unacceptable websites, but none has publicly stated a policy of blocking file sharing sites - which can be used legally and are legal.
