Post Re: Are sky blocking rapidshare.com?

It's impossible to block all large file storage sites anyway and highly undesirable. I can store huge amounts of data on my own servers, but they are shared servers and are much slower than rapidshare premium which my company uses to shift massive amounts of media around between our offices as we are geographically distributed. If know file storage companies close down for legal reasons then there will always be others available, especially on a private or fee-paying basis, even if people have to move to the inconvenience of FTP.

Hopefully this is a blip on Sky (or whoever elses) part and service will resume as usual soon. I only keep medium term subscriptions to filestorage services as I like to make sure I am not stuck with poor service for any length of time, but if such blocking was an ISP policy decision, I would always be likely to move to the unrestrictive and libertarian options, to an extent regardless of price...

      Re: Are sky blocking rapidshare.com?

      Still not working for me.

My only way to access both Megaupload & Rapid is to use the numerical address. For those that don't have it, substitute:

      195.122.131.46 for Rapidshare.com
      (Becomes http://195.122.131.46/filename etc)
      &
      209.222.148.136 for Megaupload.com
      (Becomes http://209.222.148.136/filename etc)

This way I've finally got a couple of private files from a colleague
      Regards,

      Max.

That would seem to mean Sky are not blocking it in any way and that it is a DNS server problem.

      Re: Are sky blocking rapidshare.com?

Over the past few days I have been unable to get Rapidshare, the same goes for other file storage sites - when I tried using Hide My Ass Proxy I got straight through.

      Something is going on.

Is there any method you know of for determining the likelihood of DNS issue over IWF block or vice versa?

      Re: Are sky blocking rapidshare.com?

Quite simply the internet works using DNS

A website is normally accessible by it's URL ie www. rapidshare.com although this website is physically located on a PC / server that has an IP address of xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx for example.

When you type a website URL in your browser, be it Internet Explorer or Firefox etc then the browser does all the work for you. When you type in the URL the browser then goes off across the internet looking for the website that you have typed in.

DNS basically works in the background, converting IP address's into URLs and the browser through using DNS then knows that the site you are looking for, www. rapidshare.com is located on the IP address xx.xxx.xxx.xxx and so then displays that website for you.

DNS is like a central database, which knows that any given website is located on the relevant IP address of a server and so forwards your URL to the right server. When websites move from one server to another, it can normally take upto 48 hours for the DNS (database so to speak) catch up with itself.

      IP - Internet Protocol
      DNS - Domain Name System
      PC - Personal Computer
      URL - Uniform Resource Locator

      195.122.131.46 rapidshare.com
      209.222.148.136 megaupload.com

Add that to your hosts file in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\

      Re: Are sky blocking rapidshare.com?

Thanks for that great tip no1Joeno1 !

This allows me to access Rapidshare okay but only Megaupload if I take www out of the URL. Is there any other way round that as I tend to copy & paste links into Jdownloader & it doesnt seem to allow editing of parsed URL's?

Do you know any other IP addresses I can add to the Hosts file ? Eg. Hotfile, Depositfile, Sharingmatrix, Turbobit, etc, etc,

      Many thanks again!
