Sorry that is wrong. Sky do not block or throttle any of their LLU products. The only product they do that on is Sky Connect, as they buy the bandwidth etc off BT - Basically it is a rebadged BT product.

Sky do want you on their LLU products, as they don't make any money off Connect because too many people download more than the 40GB of which they agreed to do when they signed up. I am not saying it is the majority of Connect people that do this, but the ones who do have spoilt the product for everyone else. Sky should implement per individual shaping and only penalise those that make the mickey. If it was my broadband product I know I would punish those that are spoiling it for everyone else.

On LLU Sky have their own network, and have the capacity to allow everyone to do what they please within their limits.

Max is cheaper than Connect for this reason. If you cannot get Max / Unlimited then Connect is a poorer alternative.

      You're incorrect. That's it. Simple.

Do other ISP's have to pay BT for bandwidth? If so, then why is tiscali 8meg connection faster? I always thought Sky had more money than tiscali (what the heck is tiscali?)

      Re: Are sky blocking rapidshare.com?

Yes, they all have to pay for bandwidth, Sky do a very bad job of managing their capacity and allow some users to take the mickey leaving less for others.

Plusnet for instance have a very sophisticated management setup which balances the network out and gives priority to time sensitive applications like games etc. Sky could do this if they wanted to but they would need to invest in the equipment and time needed to set it up properly.

As it is, they just seem to offer a free for all and let the lack of capacity decide who and when will be affected. They could also write out a big cheque and buy more capacity but they are not making anything out of Sky Connect as it is.

      Re: Are sky blocking rapidshare.com?

Sky also hasn't had a long term plan what to do with it's broadband which has made for some pretty bad business calls with short term goals.

When they first started james murdoch (when he was at Sky) concentrated on growth and so got as many people as possible onto Sky BB no matter what and subsidised by the TV side of the business.

Now James Murdoch is head of news international and now Sky Talk is getting all the love with growth concentrated there and he has said that the broadband needs to start showing a profit by 2010.

So as far as Sky is concerned they will not spend any more money, especially on connect and so all the customers there can just take it or leave.

Tiscali are also an LLU provider, they do not use BT equipment. They were originally an Italian company based in Sardinia, they are now owned by TalkTalk. Tiscali 8Mb is no faster than Sky's 8Mb or any other providers 8 Mb for that matter. As TalkTalk consolidates its customer base the Tiscali name will disappear.

It was a problem with RapidShare, not Sky. Everyone had problems the last week, no matter what ISP they had.

      Re: Are sky blocking rapidshare.com?

      That's not exactly correct!

On boards I frequent, it was only sky LLU subscribers who were affected.

All users of other isp's were unaffected.

I still don't know for sure who was responsible, but it is definitely fixed now.

Many of us emailed RS to complain and they just gave a bog standard response denying any responsibility.

As the original poster here, I only asked if sky were blocking RS, I wasn't accusing them.

Hi I have been reading this thread for a couple of days and just thought I would pitch in that Rapidshare has just stopped working for me again! But megaupload and speedtest are working fine, is rapidshare working for any of you guys at the moment?
