Question I get upgraded... My download drops by half.

I was recently upgraded from the Mid package to the Unlimited package because I exceeded the download limit twice within six months.

The day I was upgraded, my download speeds dropped from around 6-7Mb/s to a stable 3Mb/s. I left it for a few weeks, wondering if it would increase, but it still hasn't.

I tried contacting Sky, but when they said they were going to put me through to the techie department they hung up on me, which was annoying.

I have no idea why this would have happened. No changes have been made to my connection at home whatsoever.

Thanks for any help you can give.

As usual, post your stats from the normal position and from the Test socket. Links on how to do this-

      Normal Socket:

      ADSL Link - - - - - - - - Downstream - - Upstream
      Connection Speed - - 3071 kbps - - - - 796 kbps
      Line Attenuation - - - - 49.5 db - - - - - - 29.8 db
      Noise Margin - - - - - - 15.7 db - - - - - - 10.5 db

      Test Socket:

      ADSL Link - - - - - - - - Downstream - - Upstream
      Connection Speed - - 3071 kbps - - - - 796 kbps
      Line Attenuation - - - - 49.5 db - - - - - - 29.8 db
      Noise Margin - - - - - - 12.9 db - - - - - - 10.5 db

Only difference seems to be the noise margin on downstream.

Yes, and if you have them the correct way round, it is not possible unless your plug is not making proper contact in the socket. Pull it out and in a few times wiggling it around at the same time. You should get at least the same, if not better, figures from your Test socket.

Do you have extensions? Are they wired to the faceplate of your master socket?

That apart, you have sufficient margin to put you back up to your original speed. It just requires one of the CST team to configure your line. Unfortunately you have to jump through Tier 1's hoops to get there.

No difference, and no, I don't have any extensions.

I don't see why my line would have dropped so much in the first place when I was upgraded..

It is just DLM doing its, 'mess up a good line thing'. You are not the first and wont be the last to suffer from this. Get through to CST and they will fix it for you in minutes.

Thanks for the help. Also, if I was reaching speeds of around 7Mb on an 'upto 8Mb' connection, do you reckon I'll get higher than 10Mb after they've configured my line? I'm on upto 16Mb now, after being upgraded and I'm not that far from the exchange at all.

You will not get any more I'm afraid, you may not be far from the exchange, but your attenuation says you have a fairly long line. 6-7Mbs would be pretty good for it.

Re: I get upgraded... My download drops by half.

I'm glad I found this thread as the exact same thing has happened to me - only with much slower speeds. Whilst on the mid package I would get ~2MB on my line, which equalled ~160kb/s download speed. After being upgraded this immediately dropped down to ~80kb/s and hasn't rose since.

In case anybody's interested my stats are:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 764 kbps 796 kbps
Line Attenuation 50 db 27 db
Noise Margin 12 db 11 db

I take it I just need to phone Sky up and see what's going on?

Re: I get upgraded... My download drops by half.

I've been on Sky Max unlimited for a couple of years. In Nov 2009 Sky said they were 'upgrading my line'.Prior to this I was receiving 7680 kbps at the router and close to 6000 kbps downloads.I was having problems with slow speeds so contacted Sky.They have now 'fixed' my line at 4000 but I struggle to get half of that and in the evenings it can go as low as 300 kbps. They've also upgraded the price from 10 to 15 p month.I've emailed them to complain to no avail.I would love to be back to pre upgrade speeds but think I may have to leave.Anyone know how to get a MAC number please.
