Sky connect speed / IP profile setting

      Hi

Over the weekend my adsl speed was all over the place....the net result was running at about 240kb (www.speedtest.net).....i normally get over 1mb or there abouts (i live in rural area 3.5km from exchange down some old copper wires).

So - i checked my (Sagem) router stats and got the following:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream

Connection Speed 1792 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 61.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 12.1 db 17.0 db

So - i would expect to get speeds of about 1.7mb right?

BTW - ive moved the router onto the main BT socket (direct with front plate off).

So - after about 1hr with Sky Support, they get me to second level support and tell me that the limit on the exchange (IP Profile) is set very very low.

So i use the speedtester.bt.com site, and as Sky said, it reported:
IP Profile for your line is - 250 Kbps.

Sky tell me that they have requested this to be revised back to 2mb and it should increase back over the next 48hrs.

      So - questions:
      1. Would my attenuation / noise margin (stats im less sure of) suggest any reason i couldnt achieve adsl > 1mb?
      2. Why would my IP be set so low...does this get reduced/increased dynamically on the basis of my router performance?
      3. I have been moving my router around the house over the last few days into a new extension socket, and ensuring the internal wiring is as expected without impact to line speeds....would rebooting the router say 20 times over the last 3 days have caused the IP setting to be dropped?
      4. How can i ensure that my IP setting isnt reduced down in future?

      Many Thanks in advance,
      Northy

Have checked all filters are fine.

Revision -> distance to exchange is 6.5km (inc 1.4 multiplier for not going direct)

.would rebooting the router say 20 times over the last 3 days have caused the IP setting to be dropped?
It is possible the BT line monitoring system has seen this as a line fault and dropped your Profile to compensate. If your router is left in the same position your profile should rise again. Booting your router once or twice a day will do no harm, in fact you should reboot once a day to allow your router to resync with the exchange and pick up the new profile.

You will not get the speed you sync at, no one does. With your sync you should get a through put of about 1.5Mb.

Thanks Isitme - will post back over the next couple of days.

      PS
Is there anything further i should watch for / do to stop the profile being set lower again in the future?

Re: Sky connect speed / IP profile setting

If you have extensions you should fit a filtered faceplate. This will ensure that your internal wiring does not interfere with your ADSL signal. If you do not have extensions, there is nothing to be gained from fitting a faceplate.

Hi I hope Sky CST do and the 2mb holds if not have a look at the connect issues there are many threads

Sky tell me that they have requested this to be revised back to 2mb and it should increase back over the next 48hrs

As Isitme says could be the Bt Line monitor RAMBo what could be happening the Connect package is Traffic Managed from 5pm till Midnight and Bt line monitor seeing an issue between day and night or weekends all day and night would try to correct the issue so your IP profile would drop. So when your system try`s to resync what with the Traffic Management and The Bt Monitor your noise margin will go up and your connection speed will go down. The connect package is over Subscribed and there is not enough bandwidth.

Re: Sky connect speed / IP profile setting

whats happened is that the line speed would've dropped to about 300kbps and BT drop the IP profile to match. when the line speed went back up (with a likely 12dB profile) the ip profile won't increase until it sees the same speed for roughly 72hrs. CST can tell you the last 14 resync speeds and it'll likely be going up and down like a yo-yo

Re: Sky connect speed / IP profile setting

      Thanks for the feedback

I reported the issue Sunday night, and since then its been consistently running with a download of circa 1.7 - 1.8mb

A current "snapshot" show stats remains in line with the original post:
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1856 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 62.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 11.8 db 17.0 db

But the BT checker still says my IP profile remains at 250kb...seems like i will need to see whats happened by cop Wed.

      Regards,
      Northy
