Very slow speeds

Well i have been on sky broadband unlimited for a VERY long time now, the speeds have always been this bad and now i really need to do something about it. It has come to the point as if someone is one one computer, another person on a different computer will be affected massively.

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2048 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 49.0 db 28.5 db
Noise Margin 14.4 db 14.0 db

Hi Speedtest.net is useless if you want to see what speeds you are actually getting use Sky User - Broadband Speed Tester also thinkbroadband :: Broadband Speed Test and Broadband Speed Checker - THE UK's No.1 Broadband Speed Test do a test with all three and put them on your next post then you will see what speed you are receiving

Re: Very slow speeds

Your throughput from the speed tests are ok, but your sync speed isn't what it should be - it should be a good deal higher. The noise margin is a bit low also, so I would suggest plugging into your test socket (link below) with only a filter and the short grey adsl cable sky supplied i.e. no extensions and re-post the stats to check if your internal wiring is causing issues.

How to test your ADSL in the Master Socket

Re: Very slow speeds

I'm sober at the moment, Steve, I assure you! It's the 3-4am posts you gotta watch out for!! Haha.

His throughput on the speed tests are about right for a 2mb sync speed. His SNR, whilst not being low as such, should however be higher for his attenuation if wishing to push out a good bit more speed.

Hi yes agree but to use the speedtest.net can be very erratic. Where as the 3 I have linked Andy_M to are more accurate. the noise margin lower to about 7db will double Andy_M connection speed. The attenuation 49db should give between 5.5 and 6mbs

Re: Very slow speeds

Phone Sky and ask them to lift the cap on your line. You should get 4+Mb. If your noise margin in the Test socket is much higher then you may get more.

There is a good chance that they will change your mode to ADSL2+, you are on G.DMT(ADSL1) at the moment. It may suit your line, but in most cases it does not perform well on long lines. You will just have to wait and see what happens.

Re: Very slow speeds

All of my broadband tests bring the same ish speed; 1750/550.

Re: Very slow speeds

1.7 throughput is about right for 2Mb, overheads eat into the remainder so you never see the full speed when downloading. If the cap is lifted you will see better speed and a higher throughput.

Phone Sky and tell them you have improved your wiring and want your connection reconfigured. The reason you only get 2 Mb is because Sky have capped it to that, until you get them to lift the cap you will not get any more. When the cap is lifted you should get +4Mb which will double your download speed.
