      Abysmal download speed

I don't understand why my speeds are so slow. I'm on Sky's Unlimited broadband package and currently use the v1 router (DG834GT). I've had this package for quite some time now and haven't noticed it getting any better. I am connected wirelessly (<15 ft from router).

Can anyone help or direct me somewhere? I've searched the site with people saying they were dissapointed with 5mb/s download speeds. I'd kill for that!

      Thanks in advance

How to get your router statistics

Post up your router stats and we'll have a look to advise what can be done.

      Re: Abysmal download speed

You've got quite a long line which will affect your speeds, but you could push out a bit more. If you can plug into your test socket with the short dsl cable sky supplied (no extension cables) and re-post the stats to check if your internal wiring is holding you back.

How to test your ADSL in the Master Socket

Short DSL cable? I don't know if I have one. I tested my line speed here:

So it's clearly capped bandwidth that's the problem? Assuming my internal wiring isn't holding me back, could anything else be?

You will be 'capped' at a certain speed, but even if the cap was lifted, you'd only see maybe a few hundred kbps more, if that. The problem is there's noise being generated, basically drowning the broadband signal.

If I assume correctly, are you using an extension cable to run the broadband off? If you can't check the stats in the test socket at the moment, then you'll want to swap the extension telephone cable for a short cable, such as the one sky provide (it's a very short light grey dsl cable). Extension cables are prone to pick up interference and are usually the culprits for slow speeds and intermittency. If you can get hold of a short dsl cable and put it in place for the extension cable and re-post the stats, then we'll check if there's room for improvement. However, if you can confirm you're using the short grey dsl cable sky gave you without any extensions, then you'll want to get into the test socket and post up the stats.

I'm off to bed, so I'm sure one of the guys will help with any updates in the morning.

      Re: Abysmal download speed

It could be another case of ADSL2+ being used on a very long line. Go to MelsNotes click the detailed stats button, put in your router username and password and post the results here. Don't bother the Ping section, it is irrelevant.

      Re: Abysmal download speed

You are on ADSL2 with Fast channel which your line cannot support. G.DMT with Interleaving would be better for your line. Call Sky and ask them if they will try your line on G.DMT.
