      Problems with Sky Broadband Speed

      Hi all,

Yes sorry here's yet another question about Sky Broadband speeds!

We moved house back in June 2009 and have experienced problems with our Sky broadband. I've done some reading around on the threads here and done a lot of the initial checks as suggested by helpful forum members. Not quite sure in what order you need the info but details below:

Admittedly in our old address I never found cause to check our speed as everything was functioning ok. Old address was 2133m from our exchange and new address is a bit further out at 2155m.

We only use 2 of the telephone sockets in our house (one downstairs which has our landline phone plugged in, and one upstairs which we normally have our router plugged into). Both have microfilters plugged into them. (I read that only the phone sockets that are in use need microfilters - is this correct?)

We're currently on what was the Sky Mid package (but think we were automatically moved over to the Sky Everyday package).

      Router status as below:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 378 kbps 606 kbps
Line Attenuation 49.5 db 29.8 db
Noise Margin 9.7 db 15.0 db

I'm not sure what anything of the above means but hopefully it makes sense to someone out there!

I have been doing speed checks throughout the day (on different days, at different times) overall results below:

When plugged into the telephone socket upstairs:

      D/L = 312Kbps
      U/L = 320Kbps

      Plugged into master BT socket:

      D/L = 320Kbps
      U/L = 471Kbps

      Plugged into Test Socket:

      D/L = 312Kbps
      U/L = 453Kbps

On the Everyday package we should get up to 10Mb speed...I know we'll probably never get that speed but also know that not even getting a tenth of that is pretty poor. Can anyone give me any ideas of what to do?

I admit, I have absolutely no clue when it comes to computer stuff so please for anyone who can help, can you write it in simple non-techie terms if possible? I want to see if I can resolve this as it's frustrating...I called Sky with intention of getting our MAC code but I want to see if there's anything I can do to increase our speed first. The lady in CS ran a check on the line and supposedly we get 5Mb which I'm a little dubious about.

Also found that since moving - when we download things we can't surf the net (page unavailable or something) which is again frustrating - I've tried setting an upload/download speed limit as I thought it was a bandwidth issue but still no success. Again I have little knowledge in this area so may be doing something wrong. If anyone has any suggestions would be grateful for your assistance.

Please ask if you require any further info and I'll try and get it for you!

      Many thanks in advance.

The important figure in the stats is the noise margin, which you have not shown. Can you post the full stats please?

Re: Problems with Sky Broadband Speed

I take it - I get the noise margin stats through Sky Router Stats? If it is then I clicked on that and copy and pasted information below:

      System Up Time 01:55:12
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 221732 266217 0 8321 23743 01:53:43
      LAN 10M/100M 720 0 0 28 0 01:55:09
      WLAN 11M/54M 271261 227422 0 24143 8791 01:55:01

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 378 kbps 606 kbps
Line Attenuation 50.0 db 30.0 db
Noise Margin 9.1 db 16.0 db

      Hope this helps.

Is that from your Test socket, link below? If not please take them from there.
