Going over my usage allowance - or not!

I have Sky Broadband Everyday and have been using it for the last year without going over the limit and without any hitches. On 1st Jan Sky sent me an email to say I had exceeded my allowance and that if I go over 2 more times in 5 months they will put my monthly bill up by 5 to the Unlimited Broadband. Now I do use the internet a lot and I do download but as I work in the retail sector over December I had been extremely busy at work and not downloaded as much as normal, so there's no way I could have gone over! Anyway after that email I set my account for Sky to email when I got to 70% used. I also downloaded and installed TBBMeter to record my usage.
Today I got another email from Sky to say that I had now got to 70% of my 10GB allowance! My TBBMeter says I have only used 30%. I have also checked my Downloads folders where I keep all my music and videos I've downloaded until sorting them... that only adds to about 3.5GB.
Any ideas about how I can suddenly be going over my limit when I am downloading no more than I usually have in the last 12 months and they have never emailed me before.
Your help would be appreciated as I have emailed Sky but I just get an automated response telling me to check the website, which tells me nothing.

It is not only actual downloading that counts, normal browsing, streaming video and uploading all count. In saying that there have been several complaints about the Sky meter 'over-reading' if you are pretty sure email them and tell them that your independent measurement does not agree with their's.

Yeah I realise that all counts too, I do very little streaming (if any) and only a small amount of browsing. I definately thinks it's wrong so will be trying to find an email address to send my complaint too. Does uploading make any difference or use allowance in any way?

Yes, uploads also count towards your usage.

Thanks, ok that add about another 2GB used up then. So is the allowance 10GB inclusive of uploads and downloads then?

Ok thanks guys this explains a lot more to me now and also having looked at my TBBMeter again, it's set only to measure downloads and not uploads!

If you use P2P or Torrents, uploads can account for more than downloads!!

Would watching iplayer on my wii and watching live programmes via the internet increase my usage?

Re: Going over my usage allowance - or not!

Yes, of course it would you will then have two pieces of equipment downloading at the same time so twice the usage as just the one.

Every bit of data that passes through the router from the internet counts both in and out. The only thing that doesn't is internal network traffic so streaming from the PC to the Wii wouldn't.
