      Need some advice asap please

      I have got hold of a DLink 2640R Router that I wish to use for a few days with Sky BB.

      When I extracted my details using the web based tool on this site, I entered it into the new router, but it would not connect, I then realised I needed to enter other information. I have put this info in, and its now online (using it now). But I need to know if I have done it right, think of it as OCD of routers lol. Anyways does this look right guys?

      ===========Dlink============

      ADSL:

      Service Name = Sky
      Connection = PPPOA-VC-MUX (it would not connect on other settings)
      MTU = 1492
      NAT = Enabled
      IGMP = Enabled
      Default Route = Enabled
      VPI = 0
      VCI = 38

      Wireless:

      Enable Auto Scan =
      Security = WPA-Personal
      WPA Mode = Auto (WPA or WPA2)
      Pre Shared Key = xxxxxxxxx

      On the wireless section, do I enable auto scan or not? it is currently disabled.
      Also, my Network Key that sky gave me for security (the one each device needs) is this the Pre Shared Key? Do I enter it there? as thats the only place on that page that has the word key in it.

      EDIT just connected wireless laptop to router, it asked for which connection I want so I pick mine, then it asks for network key, I entered the one from pre shared key area and it worked, so am I secure and safe?

      For the best security you should use WPA2 and change it from the 8 letter key Sky give you. It can be up to 63 ASCII characters, just about any thing you can type on your keyboard.

      I am not sure about Auto Scan, if it works OK without it, I would leave it off. If you have a wireless device that is not being found, then you can turn it on.

      Is WPA Personal safe though?

      It is reasonably safe, but it is pointless using it if you have WPA2 which is very much safer. WPA-PSK has been cracked, to my knowledge WPA2 has not.

      Re: Need some advice asap please

      OK sorry if i`m hijacking this thread,
      But i`ve managed to set up a DLink 2640R to connect to sky bb.
      Picked it up cheap and thought i`d see if it was better than sky net gear(the old white one).
      Well I`m getting better down load sync with the DLink 2640R.
      What I was wondering is that currently my lines capped and now sure I can connect bit faster if cap is removed.
      So when I phone Sky to ask them to remove or raise cap (have improved internal wiring reason), should i put old Sky net gear back on until sorted or is it OK to leave D-Link connected.
      (asking as I know abot t&cs regarding using SKY router only.)
      Thanks in advance,

      D-Link Stats:

      Mode: G.DMT
      Type: ANNEX_A
      Status: Showtime

      Downstream Upstream
      Rate (Kbps): 3584 kbps 800 kbps

      SNR Margin (dB): 6.5 8.0
      Attenuation (dB): 58.5 31.5
      Output Power (dBm): 17.0 12.5

      Connects at 3584kbps every time rock solid.
      Attenuation on SKY Net gear was always around 55-57db
      Sky (Net gear usual connection speed was around 3200kbps

      That's as good as it gets - doing pretty well for the attenuation.

      Your noise margin shows you are getting as much as the line can take. It may be capped, but only to keep it stable, you would not get any more even if the cap was lifted.

      Cheers for comments, looks like it`s not worth trying to squeeze any more out of it then, oh well roll on cable to box then.
      RE other part of question , if i do need to call sky tech for other reasons do i need to switch back to sky router before calling them ?
