      Exclamation Usenet speed issues

I installed Alt Binz last night and set up a Newshosting account.
I downloaded about 12gb or so during the night and in the morning I found I could not get any speed beyond 30kbps when average speed should be about 600kbps. When you still have a few gbs to go it gets frustrating.

Now I contacted Newshosting and they say their service is working normally. I have my Internet slowed by Sky between 5:20pm and about 11:20pm every day which I assume is because I torrent a lot but I'm cool with that since it works fine outside those times. Problem is the download speed from Usenet slowed down around 9-10 AM while everything else was fine. I understand the FUP but from what I've heard in the past on these forums I use FAR less data per month. I also havern't read anything saying Sky slows Usenet traffic or anything else outside the peak time (within reasonable use).

We're supposed to be getting Unlimited at my house but we're stuck with Connect because someone hasn't bothered to lay the right cables in our area. Never got a notice for going over any limits though.

Does ANYONE have some tips or info? Would be very thankful.

      Re: Usenet speed issues

if your on the connect package then it's because your exchange doesnt hasnt been upgraded with skys equipment(a dslam) not because of the cables in your area. traffic management between 5pm-12am is the start of the problem with sky connect, when you start heavy downloading you see a new problem arising.. throttling

to confirm this you need to check your router stats(details in my signature) at the same time as your usenet speeds have slowed down to 30kbps, if the speed in your router stats looks normal but your getting terrible throughput speeds(in newsgroup clients and online speedtests) then you are being throttled

      Re: Usenet speed issues

      Seems normal to me.
Some reason now I've got a minor speed increase to around 50kbps on port 8000. Higher on 9000 going up to 120kbps. On port 119 it just sits there doing nothing even though it says connected...

10 minutes ago I was lucky to get 10kbps. I'm confused...

      Re: Usenet speed issues

is it just your downloading in your usenet clients thats slow or is it online speedtests as well? try the one on this site and see what results you get.. it sounds like throttling to me and the connect package gives nothing but problems sky's LLU broadband is a totally different service! what your best off doing is checking your exchange to see if there are any providers that offer a LLU service(have their equipment in the exchange), the connect package isnt kind to light users let alone downloaders. you can check your exchange on samknows.com

      Re: Usenet speed issues

Well theres TalkTalk by the looks of it.
Only thing is can't switch because of the Sky Package.

I suppose on the bright side I'm averaging 300kbps now, not anywhere near 600kbps but it'll do.

      Re: Usenet speed issues

are you paying the full 17 a month for your broadband or getting a discount? to be honest i personally would choose to split the bill between company's to get off the connect package! it is in sky's best interest to upgrade your exchange but it doesnt seem to be on their list of priorities at the moment

not much you can do about speed problems on the connect package.. except line up with all the other unhappy connect users (Unofficial) FAQ - Sky Connect Users
