Terrible speeds and multiple dropouts since joining sky

I joined Sky BB because they don't have Virgin/FO cables here in my new property.

Here are the stats plugged into the test socket

Connection Speed 1792 kbps 416 kbps
Line Attenuation 55 db 31 db
Noise Margin 7 db 18 db

I was told that I could get a maximum of 2mbs because of our location in relation to the nearest exchange, approximately 5 miles away.

Frankly, I feel that sky broadband is bloody awful, but all the while I am locked into using ADSL, there isnt going to be any improvement for me by using a different company.

      opinions?

You need to post your stats from the test socket also.

How many sockets in the house?.

Connect directly filter and router only to Test socket shown here Sky User - How to test your Master Socket
and post fresh set of stats

If you have more than the master socket check these other sockets are dead while your
connected to the Test socket, they should be.

Also check for any audible noise on the phone line, static/crackles etc pick
phone up and press 1 to stop dial tone and then listen.

there are 2 sockets. The main socket and an extension in the other room which is a hard wired extension that was installed by BT for the previous tennant. There is NO discernible noise on the line.

I literally just had another drop out, which can be fixed by rebooting the router. I am now getting the following stats from the same socket immediately after the drop out/reboot procedure

Connection Speed 1600 kbps 416 kbps
Line Attenuation 55 db 31 db
Noise Margin 8 db 19 db

If you have a Test socket, link below, plug in there and take the stats.

If you don't have a Test socket, take the faceplate off the Master socket and remove all the wires on the back of the faceplate except those on terminals 2 and 5. The one on terminal 3 is the bell wire which can cause interference and any others are not used. Take the stats before and after removing the wires.

Re: Terrible speeds and multiple dropouts since joining sky

Is anything else plugged into the line (Sky+ box etc)? If so how do they connect onto the line? By the way all the first three replies missed the line about test socket so no point getting annoyed with Isitme
Since you have done the test socket stats a set from the normal socket would be good for comparison. Also, how long have you been with Sky? Are you still within the initial 10 day DLM period?

Re: Terrible speeds and multiple dropouts since joining sky

Just to clear something up, many come on here thinking that the Master socket is the TEST socket. To be sure the person is using the correct socket we ask again that they use the TEST socket. Most will reply that they have removed the faceplate and plugged into it and the diagnosis can proceed from there.

If you are in the TEST socket, either you have a fault on your external line or have a faulty router.
